THE MISSION OF THE WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP INSTITUTE IS TO FOSTER STUDENTS' INTELLECTUAL, PERSONAL, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INDIVIDUALLY TAILORED, QUALITY INTERNSHIPS AND CHALLENGING ACADEMIC COURSEWORK THAT TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL AND REFLECT THE BEST PRACTICES OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND LIBERAL EDUCATION.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, GRADUATE STUDENTS, AND RECENT GRADUATES FROM THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD PARTICIPATED IN THE WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP INSTITUTE'S ACADEMIC INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS IN WASHINGTON, DC DURING 2019. THE WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP INSTITUTE WELCOMED EIGHTY-FOUR STUDENTS WITH A VARIETY OF MAJORS FOR THE SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL TERMS. OUR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PROMOTES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AND PERSONAL GROWTH FOR STUDENTS. IT IS DISTINGUISHED BY ITS STRUCTURED ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT GROUNDED IN THE VALUES AND PRACTICES OF LIBERAL EDUCATION. STUDENTS CAN COMPLETE A FULL SEMESTER OF CREDIT THROUGH SUBSTANTIVE INTERNSHIPS THAT ARE CAREFULLY SELECTED TO MATCH THEIR ACADEMIC AND CAREER INTERESTS AND COMPLEMENTED BY RIGOROUS COURSEWORK. WE TAKE PRIDE IN OFFERING INDIVIDUALIZED ADVISING TO STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THEIR INTERNSHIP AND COURSE EXPERIENCE. WHEN POLLED ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE IN WASHINGTON, DC, NINETY-SIX PERCENT OF THE RESPONDENTS SAID THAT THEY IMPROVED THEIR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND INCREASED THEIR PREPAREDNESS TO ENTER THE JOB MARKET. NINETY-FIVE PERCENT SAID THAT THEY NETWORKED AND MADE CONTACTS. NINETY-FOUR PERCENT SAID THAT THEY MADE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THEIR CLASSROOM LEARNING AND THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD. STUDENTS INTERNED FOUR FULL DAYS PER WEEK AND PARTICIPATED IN TWO COURSES ON THE OTHER DAY OF THE WEEK. ONE COURSE WAS THE "INTERNSHIP SEMINAR: REFLECTIONS ON PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND THE OTHER WAS A CORE COURSE, AN ACADEMIC POLICY SEMINAR THAT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF OUR LOCATION IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL. THE CORE COURSE TOPICS WERE "INSIDE WASHINGTON: POLITICS AND POLICY, AND "INTERNATIONAL AND FOREIGN POLICY STUDIES." THE WASHINGTON INTERNSHIP INSTITUTE OFFERED A VARIETY OF CO-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES IN 2019. ACTIVITIES INCLUDED WASHINGTON NATIONALS BASEBALL GAMES AND VISITS TO THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE, AND THE NEWSEUM.
