JLW PROMOTES VOLUNTARISM AND DEVELOPS THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY.

VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT IS CRITICAL PART OF THE JLW MISSION. EACH YEAR, JLW PLACES MORE THAN 1,200 MEMBERS IN COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AS TRAINED VOLUNTEERS. BY EMPOWERING THIS NETWORK OF WOMEN WITH THE SKILLSET AND TOOLS TO VOLUNTEER AND LEAD EFFECTIVELY, WE ARE ABLE TO FOSTER LASTING COMMUNITY CHANGE. EVERY JLW VOLUNTEER RECEIVES TRAINING FROM THE LEAGUE THROUGHOUT HER MEMBERSHIP. ADDITIONALLY, THE JLW LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE OFFERS REGULAR TRAINING IN LEADERSHIP SKILLS TO MEMBERS WHO ARE IN OR ARE SEEKING LEADERSHIP ROLES. THESE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COURSES SUPPORT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS IN MULTIPLE AREAS: PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS, BOARD LEADERSHIP, COMMUNITY AWARENESS, AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT. SINCE 2014, NEARLY 140 MEMBERS HAVE COMPLETED OUR GET ON BOARD TRAINING, WHICH EQUIPS WOMEN TO SERVE ON COMMUNITY BOARDS. OUR DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING COMMITTEE HOSTS DOZENS OF TOPIC-SPECIFIC SEMINARS EACH YEAR FOR MEMBERS; RECENT SUBJECTS HAVE INCLUDED: VOLUNTEERING WITH UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, AND NAVIGATING NEGOTIATIONS.

JLW PARTNERS WITH A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO INCREASE THEIR CAPACITY TO SERVE WASHINGTON, DC, RESIDENTS BY PROVIDING VOLUNTEERS AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT. WE PLACE MORE THAN 1,200 VOLUNTEERS DIRECTLY INTO OUR COMMUNITY PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE CRITICAL VOLUNTEER SUPPORT WHERE THEIR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED MOST. OUR VOLUNTEERS WORK WITH ORGANIZATIONS ACROSS THE GREATER WASHINGTON, DC, REGION TO TUTOR CHILDREN, MENTOR PARENTS AND WOMEN IN RECOVERY, DELIVER LIFE SKILLS AND CAREER SKILLS, AND SUPPORT CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS, AMONG OTHERS. IN PARTICULAR, THE LEAGUE CURRENTLY FOCUSES RESOURCES ON THE COMPLEX ISSUES OF LITERACY: CHILD, ADULT, AND CULTURAL. ADDITIONALLY, WE PROVIDE GRANTS TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP THEM EXPAND THEIR EFFORTS, AWARD AN ANNUAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP EVERY SPRING TO A DISTRICT GRADUATE WITH A STRONG ACADEMIC RECORD AND SIGNIFICANT VOLUNTEER SERVICE, AND PROVIDE THOUSANDS OF BOOKS TO CHILDREN EACH YEAR. FURTHERMORE, JLW UNIQUELY SERVES AS A CONVENER OF KNOWLEDGE AND A SOURCE TO WHICH OUR COMMUNITY CAN TURN WHEN THEY HAVE A PROBLEM TO SOLVE; ONE WAY WE ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION ACROSS A WIDE ARRAY OF DISTRICT INSTITUTIONS AND DIVERSE DISCIPLINES IS BY HOLDING ROUNDTABLES ON VARIOUS ISSUES AND CHALLENGES FACING THE COMMUNITY, SUCH AS STEM EDUCATION, THE ROLE OF GRANTS, AND CULTURAL LITERACY.
