To create thriving businesses that offer stable jobs for survivors of trauma, exploitation and trafficking, with a focus on products and services that emphasize hands-on engagement, workplace training and healing support.
Support for Business: training and mentoring for businesses that employ individuals impacted by complex trauma. One Market Project business, Nguvu Dairy in Uganda, doubled its production capacity, enabling the employment of 100 individuals in 2020. Through these jobs, an additional 500 lives benefited from the employees? income creation. Milk supply is now from 11 farmers who have a reliable market for their milk. Further, an estimated 3,086 consumers improved their nutrition as a result of our business. Despite the global pandemic and with necessary precautions, Nguvu Dairy was able to produce and sell yogurt to consumers who are eager for nutritious and affordable foodstuffs.
Creation of new businesses and expansion of existing businesses that employ individuals impacted by complex trauma. One new Market Project business in northern Uganda, Takataka, began production of plastic face shields for health care workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, using recycled plastic waste. Takataka employed 16, including 9 street-connected youth, providing them with a real job for the first time in their lives and with opportunities to participate in trauma healing programs. The business also recycled more than 1,000 kg of plastic waste from public spaces to make the shields. In addition, 9,787 health care workers increased their protection from Covid by having access to affordable face shields.
Trauma Training and Impact Evaluation: training for business managers in demonstrating the needed respect, safety (emotional, psychological, and physical), healthy autonomy, and community for the trauma survivors it employs; providing resources and curriculum for employers to host trauma healing groups for managers and employees. Research to measure the impact of a job in a trauma-informed workplace on a person?s healing from complex trauma. In 2020, The Market Project in partnership with others facilitated four, 16-week healing groups with 52 employees and community members. Eight managers completed training. Because of disruptions due to the pandemic including the 2-month closure of the business, impact evaluation work focused on a review of processes and completion of a logic model framework and theory of change. In 2019, 46% of employees experienced two or more traumatic experiences ranging from exposure to war, domestic violence, or sexual or physical violence. Further, 50% were the sole or primary household income earner and supported an average of 5 dependents, and 59% were youth, aged 18-30.
