The organization is dedicated to educating the public about this forgotten, deleted and untold history and, in turn, to achieving full civil equality for LGBT Americans through its "archive activism."
The organization's mission is to conduct original archival research for powerful educational programs focusing on gay and lesbian legal, political and policy history, oftentimes sealed or destroyed.
Project CURED, a collaborative effort to produce a documentary for public television about the American Psychiatric Association's historic 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illness. The target audience is a broad spectrum of people interested in history, science, medicine and LGBTQ equality.
Education Program. The organization has collected thousands of pages of original documents that provide the evidentiary history of brutal government animus toward LGBT Americans. This year, our education program has principally focused on two major areas. First, during the year we highlighted our documents that played a prominent role in "The Deviant's War" by Eric Cervini. Our second area of focus emphasized historic documents and information related to conversion therapy, the practice of trying to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, primarily through psychological, spiritual, or religious means. Our goal, to educate families, communities, the press and legislators.
Lou Chibbaro Papers Project, the preservation and organization of "Washington Blade" veteran reporter Lou Chibbaro's papers. The project involves working with Lou to organize some 76 boxes of his reporting files covering three decades of LGBTQ politics, activism, culture and crime at "The Washington Blade". In 2020 the Mattachine Society donated $6,000 to fund a fellowship at the George Washington University Library to begin processing the Chibbaro Papers.
