THE MISSION OF MCIP AND ITS PUBLIC SCHOOL AFFILIATE, CHEC, IS TO STRIVE TO BECOME A MODEL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY THAT RESPECTS AND RESPONDS TO THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF OUR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS BY PREPARING THEM FOR THE ACADEMIC RIGORS OF COLLEGE AND AS LEADERS IN THE QUEST FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE. A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY IS A COLLABORATIVE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THE ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF AND TEACHERS IN A SCHOOL CONTINUOUSLY SEEK AND SHARE LEARNING AND THEN ACT ON WHAT THEY LEARN. THE GOAL IS TO ENHANCE THEIR EFFECTIVENESS AS PROFESSIONALS TO BENEFIT STUDENT EDUCATION. THE RESULTS OF THIS RESEARCH-BASED APPROACH IS THAT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE DECREASED DROPOUT RATE AND FEWER CLASSES "SKIPPED", LOWER RATES OF ABSENTEEISM, INCREASED LEARNING THAT IS DISTRIBUTED MORE EQUITABLY IN A SMALLER SIZED SCHOOL, GREATER ACADEMIC GAINS THAN IN TRADITIONAL SCHOOLS, AND SMALLER ACHIEVEMENT GAPS BETWEEN STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS.
AFTER SCHOOL "BEYOND THE BELLS" PROGRAM - TO HELP EACH STUDENT REACH HIS OR HER FULL POTENTIAL, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES DAILY INDIVIDUALIZED AND SMALL GROUP TUTORING SESSIONS, SELF-PACED COMPUTER-BASED INSTRUCTION, WRITING LABS AND ACCESS TO A HOMEWORK CENTER. STUDENTS RECEIVE INSTRUCTION IN ALGEBRA, TRIGONOMETRY, GEOMETRY, SAT PREP, AND AP ACADEMY ARTS, MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATER ACTIVITIES EXTEND THE CLASSROOM INTO THE CITY. TEACHERS REVIEW INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND STUDENTS GET INVOLVED BY PLANNING SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES AND FESTIVALS. THE CENTER IS RUN BY BOARD-CERTIFIED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS, IS NAEYC ACCREDITED AND ENGAGES THE CHILDREN IN COGNITIVELY STIMULATING ACTIVITIES TAILORED FOR THEIR AGES. EDUCATORS ENCOURAGE INFANTS TO SPEAK IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGES TO FOSTER A LINK BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL. BOTH TEEN MOTHERS AND FATHERS RECEIVE CASE MANAGEMENT SERVICES, PARENTING CLASSES, LIFE-SKILLS WORKSHOPS AND TUTORING SERVICES. WITHOUT THIS SERVICE, MANY STUDENTS MIGHT BE MISSING OUT ON THEIR EDUCATION. INSTEAD, THEY ARE MASTERING IT - FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR YOUNG FAMILIES.
EDUCATION PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE - MCIP IS KEENLY AWARE THAT TEACHER QUALITY AND EFFECTIVE TEACHING HAS THE GREATEST POTENTIAL TO IMPACT STUDENT LEARNING AND THAT ACHIEVEMENT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO TEACHER COMPETENCE. THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE PROVIDES TEACHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS AND CONTENT KNOWLEDGE BY BRINGING IN SUBJECT EXPERTS TO EXPOSE FACULTY TO CUTTING EDGE INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES, TO FACILITATE COLLECTIVE AND DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF NEW STANDARDS LIKE THE COMMON CORE AND TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS CERTIFIED IN THEIR CONTENT AREAS. TEACHERS PROMOTE DIVERSIONARY ACTIVITIES AND EMPHASIZE GREAT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. STUDENTS LEARN THROUGH CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, PEER EDUCATION, MENTORING, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING, AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT. STUDENTS LEARN SKILLS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL.
