THIS TEAM ENGAGED EXPERTS ACROSS A WIDE VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES "PUBLIC-FRIENDLY" SPACES WORK. WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE EFFORTS SHIFTED TO HELPING INSPIRE AND SHAPE NEW PUBLIC PLATFORMS THAT WILL EMERGE IN THE YEARS TO COME.
CENSUS: THE 2020 CENSUS INVOLVED UNPRECEDENTED COMPLEXITY, WITH PEOPLE TALKING MORE OPENLY AND ANXIOUSLY ABOUT THE RISK OF AN UNACCEPTABLY FLAWED CENSUS. EVEN WITH THE BEST FORESIGHT AND PLANNING, THE FIRST-TIME DIGITAL NATURE OF THIS CENSUS COMBINED WITH THE FRAUGHT RELATIONSHIP OUR DEMOCRACY CURRENTLY HAS WITH THE INTERNET CREATES DAUNTING POTENTIAL CHALLENGES FOR A FAIR AND ACCURATE CENSUS. THE PANDEMIC ADDED TO THE CHALLENGES. NCOC'S CENSUS TEAM ENDEAVORED TO INSURER THE LIKELIHOOD OF A SUCCESSFUL CENSUS COUNT, HELPING MITIGATE THE RISK OF 24M RESIDENTS GOING UNCOUNTED, BUILD CAPACITY FOR RAPID RESPONSE TO DISINFORMATION, BUILD AWARENESS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF PARTICIPATION IN THE CENSUS, AND INCREASE UNDERSTANDING AROUND THE VALUE OF GOVERNMENT DATA.
STUDENTS LEARN STUDENTS VOTE (SLSV): A NEW PROGRAM THIS YEAR, THIS TEAM WORKED WITH COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN THE US ON WAYS TO FOSTER THE NEXT GENERATION OF INFORMED, ENGAGED CITIZENS NECESSARY FOR OUR DEMOCRACY TO THRIVE. THIS WORK WAS ESSENTIAL, GIVEN FEDERAL REGULATIONS IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION ACT REQUIRE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO PROMOTE VOTER REGISTRATION ON THEIR CAMPUSES. CURRENT YEAR EFFORTS INVOLVED WORKING WITH COLLEGE ADMINISTRATORS AND FACULTY IN IDENTIFYING AND IMPLEMENTING WAYS TO INCREASE VOTER PARTICIPATED AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT THROUGH DATA-DRIVEN APPROACHES.
