SENEGAL - USAID FEED THE FUTURE KAWOLOR:THIS USAID PROJECT CONTRIBUTES TO THE SENEGALESE GOVERNMENT'S STRATEGY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST MALNUTRITION, FOOD INSECURITY AND POVERTY. KAWOLOR IS INSPIRED BY LESSONS LEARNED FROM USAID'S YAAJEENDE, IMPLEMENTED BY NCBA CLUSA FROM 2010-17. THE PROJECT AIMS TO CURB MALNUTRITION BY EMPOWERING ORGANIZATIONS AND REGIONAL RESOURCES PARTNERS TO SCALE UP NUTRITION LED AGRICULTURE AND USE MARKET OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY. THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE IS TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION AND MARKETING OF SAFE AND NUTRITIOUS FOODS WHILE ENCOURAGING HOUSEHOLD LEVEL CONSUMPTION OF DIVERSE DIETS, FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE AND CHILDREN UNDER TWO YEARS OF AGE. NCBA CLUSA TRAINS AND SUPPORTS LOCAL INSTITUTIONS, SUCH AS COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, WOMEN'S GROUPS, CITIZEN WORKING GROUPS, COMMUNITY BASED SOLUTION PROVIDERS (CBSPS) AND PRIVATE FIRMS, TO LEAD THEIR OWN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT. A KEY PLATFORM IS DEBBO GALLE GROUPS (WOMEN'S GROUPS) THAT ARE TARGETED FOR INTERNAL SAVINGS AND LOANS, HORTICULTURE, SMALL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT, AND NUTRITION EDUCATION. KAWOLOR IS LINKING ACTIVITIES TO MARKETS AND SUPPORTING PARTNERS TO DEVELOP MARKET RELATIONSHIPS. THIS FOCUS SUPPORTS BUILDING AND EXPANDING THE NETWORK OF CBSPS, ORGANIZED IN INDEPENDENT NETWORK CALLED CULTIVERT. KAWOLOR ALSO ENGAGES THE PRIVATE SECTOR, SUCH AS FIRMS OFFERING SOLUTIONS IN IMPROVED AGGREGATION, TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE OF PERISHABLE FOOD. THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS COMMUNITIES TO SUSTAINABLY INCREASE CONSUMPTION OF NUTRITIOUS AND SAFE DIETS, INCREASE ON-FARM AVAILABILITY AND MARKET SUPPLY OF DIVERSE, MICRO-NUTRIENT RICH FOODS, INCREASE RESILIENCE AND INCOME, INCREASE ADOPTION OF NUTRITION AND CARE PRACTICES, AND IMPROVE THE GOVERNANCE OF FOOD SYSTEMS. THE PROJECT INTERVENES IN 3,500 VILLAGES ACROSS 129 COMMUNES IN 8 REGIONS REACHING 150,000 HOUSEHOLDS, 500,000 CHILDREN AND 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE OVER FIVE YEARS.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - USDA SAFE AGRICULTURE FOOD EXPORT PROJECT (SAFE):THE USDA-FUNDED SAFE AGRICULTURE FOOD EXPORT PROJECT (SAFE), KNOWN LOCALLY AS THE PROGANA PROJECT, WILL, OVER THE COURSE OF FIVE YEARS, INCREASE THE VALUE CHAINS IN TWO SECTORS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: BEEF AND DAIRY. THIS PROJECT IMPROVES AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY BY INCREASING THE USE OF IMPROVED TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES; IMPROVING FARM MANAGEMENT; INCREASING THE AVAILABILITY OF INPUTS AND USE OF FINANCIAL SERVICES; STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITY OF GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS AND KEY GROUPS; INCREASING THE LEVERAGE OF PRIVATE SECTOR RESOURCES; AND ACCESSING NEW MARKETS FOR BEEF PRODUCTS BY SUPPORTING THE DOMINICAN'S BEEF INSPECTION SYSTEM TO ACHIEVE USDA-FSIS EQUIVALENCE.

NIGER AND BURKINA FASO - REGIS-ER:THROUGH THE RESILIENCE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SAHEL - ENHANCED RESILIENCE (REGIS-ER), NCBA CLUSA HAS SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED, SCALED-UP, AND PROMOTED RESILIENCE ACTIVITIES IN LIVELIHOODS (CENTERED ON NUTRITION-LED AGRICULTURE), HEALTH AND NUTRITION, WASH (WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE), LOCAL GOVERNANCE (FOCUSING ON NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT), AND SHOCK RESPONSIVENESS FOR THE BENEFIT OF VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN 6 REGIONS IN NIGER AND BURKINA FASO. IN FY19, REGIS-ER WAS GRANTED A 1-YEAR COST EXTENSION BY USAID TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT COMMUNES AND COMMUNITIES IN TAKING OWNERSHIP OF NINE RESILIENCE ACTIVITIES WITH A RENEWED FOCUS ON YOUTH ENGAGEMENT. THE PROJECT COMPLETED ITS TRANSITION FROM DIRECT TO INDIRECT IMPLEMENTATION, WITH ITS NEW IMPLEMENTING MODE BASED ON COACHING THREE LOCAL INSTITUTIONS (MUNICIPAL COUNCILS, CITIZEN WORKING GROUPS AND SERVICES PROVIDERS' PLATFORMS) ACROSS 13 COMMUNES. THE PROJECT SIGNED COACHING CONTRACTS WITH THE 3 LOCAL INSTITUTIONS IN EACH COMMUNE IN ORDER TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR OBJECTIVES, INCLUDING TAKING OWNERSHIP OF THE CONSOLIDATION AND SCALING-UP OF SUCCESSFUL RESILIENCE ACTIVITIES AND BEST PRACTICES, AND IMPROVING THEIR PERFORMANCE. IN JULY 2019, THE PROJECT ADOPTED USAID'S POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (PYD) FRAMEWORK AND CONDUCTED A TRAINING OF TRAINERS ON HOW TO APPLY THE PYD APPROACH IN THE FIELD FOR STAFF WHO WOULD LATER COACH LOCAL INSTITUTIONS ON THIS. IN FY20, THE PROJECT BEGAN BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH AND TARGETING YOUTH AGED 15-25 IN TERMS OF THEIR INITIAL INVOLVEMENT AND PARTICIPATION FOR ADVANCING THEIR OWN PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THAT OF THEIR COMMUNITIES.
