SHARE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT AND ENCOURAGE OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE AMONG OUR MEMBERS.HYDROPOWER, AMERICA'S FIRST RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCE, PROVIDES POWER TO APPROXIMATELY 30 MILLION AMERICANS. WATERPOWER IN ALL ITS FORMS (INCLUDING HYDROPOWER, PUMPED STORAGE, AND MARINE ENERGY) PROVIDES OVER 100 GW OF RELIABLE, FLEXIBLE, CARBON-FREE ELECTRICITY. AN ADDITIONAL 50 GWS OF GENERATION IS POSSIBLE - WITHOUT NEW DAMS - THROUGH UPGRADES, NEW GENERATION AT EXISTING NON-POWERED DAMS, AND NEW CLOSED-LOOP PUMPED STORAGE. IN 2019, NHA MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN ENHANCING NHA'S VALUE PROPOSITION IN 3 AREAS AS DESCRIBED IN PART III.

FACILITATING INDUSTRY CONNECTIONSNHA HOSTED A RANGE OF INDUSTRY EVENTS IN 2019 TO DEEPEN CONNECTIONS BETWEEN AND AMONG HYDROPOWER PROFESSIONALS, BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, AND FACILITATE BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS. OUR SIGNATURE EVENT, WATERPOWER WEEK IN WASHINGTON, CONTINUES TO BE THE NATION'S PREMIER HYDROPOWER AND MARINE ENERGY EVENT. THE THREE DAY EVENT INCLUDED THE NHA ANNUAL CONFERENCE, THE INTERNATIONAL MARINE ENERGY CONFERENCE AND MARINE ENERGY TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM. IN ADDITION, NHA HOSTED FIVE REGIONAL MEETINGS IN CALIFORNIA, ALASKA, SOUTH CAROLINA, MASSACHUSETTS, AND MINNESOTA. NHA ALSO HOSTED ITS HYDRAULIC POWER RETREAT IN VIRGINIA AND A MEETING OF ITS CEO COUNCIL IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA. ATTENDENCE AT NHA EVENTS CONTINUES TO INCREASE YEAR AFTER YEAR.
PROVIDING TECHNICAL INSIGHTS AND PUBLIC AFFAIRSTO PROVIDE MEMBERS INSIGHTS ABOUT TIMELY POLICY AND INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENTS, NHA'S TECHNICAL COMMITTEES MET REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, FACILITATED BEST PRACTICE EXCHANGES, AND HOSTED INFORMATIVE WEBINARS AND OTHER TRAINING SESSIONS. NHA TECHNICAL COMMITTEES INCLUDED THE HYDRAULIC POWER COMMITTEE (INCLUDING ITS OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM AND DAM SAFETY SUBCOMMITTEE), THE MARINE ENERGY COMMITTEE, THE SMALL HYDROPOWER COMMITTEE, THE WATERPOWER INNOVATION COUNCIL, AND THE CEO COUNCIL.NHA ALSO ACTED AS BOTH A VEHICLE FOR CONVEYING THE INDUSTRY'S MESSAGES TO KEY AUDIENCES AND AS A NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR INFORMATION ABOUT HYDROPOWER AND RELATED ENERGY ISSUES. IN CONSULTATION WITH THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, NHA WORKED TO PROVIDE THE INDUSTRY'S PERSPECTIVE AND SHAPE NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PRESS, PARTNERED CLOSELY WITH MEMBERS TO CREATE REGIONAL AND LOCAL MEDIA OPPORTUNTIES, AND INAUGURATED A NEW EVENT, NATIONAL HYDROPOWER DAY, TO CELEBRATE HYDROPOWER'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR NATION'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
PROMOTING POLICY IMPROVEMENTSNHA CONTINUED ITS EFFORTS TO ENCOURAGE THAT WATERPOWER IN ALL ITS FORMS (INCLUDING TRADITIONAL HYDROPOWER, PUMPED STORAGE AND MARINE ENERGY) RECEIVE PARITY WITH OTHER CLEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES. NHA'S POLICY ADVOCACY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2019 INCLUDE:-REINSTATEMENT OF THE FEDERAL HYDROPOWER TAX INCENTIVES; -RECORD APPROPRIATIONS FOR DOE'S WATERPOWER TECHNOLOGY OFFICE; -MAJOR REGULATORY REFORMS PROPOSED UNDER NEPA, THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT AND EPA'S WATER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM (CLEAN WATER ACT SECTION 401), -FERC FINALIZED NEW RULES IMPLEMENTING THE 2018 AMERICAN WATER INFRASTRUCTURE ACT. -ENGAGEMENT IN RTO-ISO PROCEEDINGS AROUND THE NATION TO SHAPE MARKET DESIGN TO FULLY VALUE THE SERVICES THAT HYDROPOWER PROVIDES TO THE GRID.
