TO HELP IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES BY PROVIDING LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT; AND ALSO TO PROMOTE EQUALITY OF TREATMENT IN ALL AREAS OF IMMIGRATION LAW, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND PUBLIC POLICIES RELATED TO IMMIGRATION.
GENERAL PROGRAMS THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT WORKS TO PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE MOST DISENFRANCHISED AND VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, INCLUDING WOMEN WHO ARE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, PEOPLE CONFRONTING CRIMES IN THE WORKPLACE, CHILDREN, AND NONCITIZEN CRIMINAL OFFENDERS. WE WORK BOTH INDEPENDENTLY AND COLLABORATIVELY WITH IMMIGRATION ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. TO EDUCATE AND STRENGTHEN THE CAPACITY OF COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND IMMIGRATION PROFESSIONALS, WHILE PROMOTING PUBLIC POLICY CHANGE THROUGH DIRECT ADVOCACY.
CRIMINAL & DEPORTATION DEFENSE THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT TRAINS AND ASSISTS PUBLIC DEFENDERS TO ASSESS AND UNDERSTAND THE IMMIGRATION CONSEQUENCES THEIR CLIENTS FACE. THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT ALSO PROVIDES TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO ADVOCATES, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AND FAMILIES ON DEPORTATION DEFENSE AND CUSTODY ISSUES. WE ALSO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND REFERRALS TO FAMILIES AND DETAINED IMMIGRANTS NAVIGATING THE DETENTION SYSTEM. THESE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE TO PRACTITIONERS EVERYWHERE. SINCE IT BEGAN TRACKING INQUIRIES IN 2003, THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT HAS PROVIDED MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND INSTANCES OF DIRECT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO ATTORNEYS IN ALL FIFTY STATES, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, PUERTO RICO, GUAM, AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS.
IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT PROVIDES LEGAL SUPPORT, TRAINING, AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO NONCITIZENS, LEGAL ADVOCATES, COMMUNITY GROUPS, AND FAMILIES ABOUT THEIR LEGAL, CONSTITUTIONAL, AND CIVIL RIGHTS UPON ARREST. THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION PROJECT DEVELOPS COMMUNITY RESOURCE MATERIALS TO BUILD GREATER AWARENESS ABOUT REMEDIES TO GOVERNMENTAL MISCONDUCT. WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT ALL IMMIGRANTS ARE TREATED FAIRLY UNDER IMMIGRATION LAWS AND OUR CONSTITUTION.
