Organizations Filed Purposes: THE NATIONAL LOW INCOME HOUSING COALITION (NLIHC) IS DEDICATED SOLELY TO ACHIEVING SOCIALLY JUST PUBLIC POLICY THAT ENSURES PEOPLE WITH THE LOWEST INCOMES IN THE UNITED STATES HAVE AFFORDABLE AND DECENT HOMES. FOUNDED IN 1974 BY CUSHING DOLBEARE, NLIHC RESEARCHES, EDUCATES, ORGANIZES AND ADVOCATES TO ENSURE DECENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR THE LOWEST-INCOME PEOPLE IN AMERICA. OUR GOALS ARE TO PRESERVE EXISTING FEDERALLY ASSISTED HOMES AND HOUSING RESOURCES, EXPAND THE SUPPLY OF LOW-INCOME HOUSING, AND ESTABLISH HOUSING STABILITY AS THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF FEDERAL LOW-INCOME HOUSING POLICY.

NLIHC'S GOALS ARE TO PRESERVE EXISTING FEDERALLY ASSISTED HOMES AND HOUSING RESOURCES, EXPAND THE SUPPLY OF LOW-INCOME HOUSING, AND ESTABLISH HOUSING STABILITY AS THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF FEDERAL LOW-INCOME HOUSING POLICY. WE STRIVE TO END HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSING POVERTY IN AMERICA.IN 2019, NLIHC:PRODUCED AND WIDELY DISTRIBUTED A FLAGSHIP ONLINE AND PRINT RESEARCH PRODUCT, "OUT OF REACH," WHICH DOCUMENTS THE "HOUSING WAGE" NEEDED FOR A HOUSEHOLD TO AFFORD A MODEST RENTAL APARTMENT IN EVERY STATE AND JURISDICTION IN THE COUNTRY - AND BY ZIP CODE FOR METROPOLITAN AREAS - AND SHOWCASES THE GAP BETWEEN PREVAILING RENTS AND WHAT RENTERS EARN AND PREVAILING MINIMUM WAGES. THE CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED ITS POLICY AGENDA, HELPED ADVANCE TWO SIGNIFICANT FEDERAL POLICIES WITH BIPARTISAN SUPPORT IN CONGRESS, AND COMMISSIONED A NATIONAL POLL THAT FOUND 85% OF THE PUBLIC BELIEVE ENSURING EVERYONE HAS A SAFE, DECENT, AFFORDABLE PLACE TO LIVE SHOULD BE A TOP NATIONAL PRIORITY, AND 8 IN 10 WANT CONGRESS AND THE ADMINISTRATION TO TAKE MAJOR ACTION. LAUNCHED AND LED THE "OUR HOMES, OUR VOTES" NONPARTISAN VOTER AND CANDIDATE ENGAGEMENT PROJECT WHICH SUCCEEDED IN GETTING FIFTEEN 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES PUTTING FORWARD COMPREHENSIVE HOUSING PLANS AND TALKING ABOUT THEM ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL AS NEVER BEFORE, WITH THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THE PLANS CENTERED ON THE HOUSING NEEDS OF THE LOWEST-INCOME PEOPLE. NLIHC'S EDUCATING, COMMUNICATIONS, AND MOBILIZATION WORK HELPED MAINTAIN A 10% INCREASE TO HUD'S BUDGET IN FY19 AND FY20 (WHEN THE ADMINISTRATION CALLED FOR 15-20% CUTS); THE INTRODUCTION AND PASSAGE IN THE HOUSE OF A BIPARTISAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT-DISASTER RECOVERY AUTHORIZATION AND REFORM BILL WITH VIRTUALLY ALL OF NLIHC'S POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS; MULTIPLE LAWMAKERS DRAFTING AND INTRODUCING OTHER KEY DISASTER HOUSING RECOVERY PROPOSALS; A BIPARTISAN BILL INTRODUCED IN THE SENATE TO CREATE A PILOT NATIONAL HOUSING STABILIZATION FUND TO PROTECT FAMILIES FROM EVICTION; A BIPARTISAN BILL INTRODUCED IN THE SENATE TO CREATE 500,000 OPPORTUNITY/MOBILITY HOUSING VOUCHERS TO HELP LOW-INCOME PEOPLE MOVE TO HIGHER-OPPORTUNITY COMMUNITIES; AND NUMEROUS OTHER BILLS INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS WITH BOLD PROPOSALS TO END HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSING POVERTY IN THE U.S.
