THE PINCHOT INSTITUTE FOR CONSERVATION IS A PUBLIC BENEFIT NONPROFIT CORPORATION. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT PROTECTING NATURE AND CREATING BREAKTHROUGHS THAT RESULT IN MORE SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEMS AND ECONOMIES. THE INSTITUTE IS NON-PARTISAN AND INCLUSIVE, AND WORKS IN COLLABORATION WITH PARTNERS IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS ON NEW THINKING, POLICIES, AND ACTIONS THAT, IN GIFFORD PINCHOT'S WORDS, RESULT IN "...THE GREATEST GOOD, FOR THE GREATEST NUMBER, IN THE LONG RUN."
WE WORK ON THE MOST PRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES OF OUR DAY, INCLUDING PROTECTING WATER RESOURCES, SLOWING AND ADAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE, RESTORING FORESTS THROUGH RURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND MAKING CONSERVATION A PRIORITY AND POSSIBILITY FOR PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LANDOWNERS ALIKE.
NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION SERVICE: FOR SEVERAL YEARS THE INSTITUTE HAS BEEN PARTNERING WITH THE USDA NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION SERVICE TO REVIEW SURVEY BOUNDARIES, EVALUATE RIGHTS OF WAY, AND HELP TITLE AND REGISTER LANDS THAT HAVE BEEN PROTECTED THROUGH EASEMENTS OR OTHERWISE ACQUIRED FOR THE PURPOSES OF CONSERVATION. ESTABLISHING THE EXTENT AND OWNERSHIP OF CONSERVED LANDS IS CRITICAL TO THEIR PROTECTION OVER THE LONG TERM. IN SOME CASES, CHANGES IN THE LANDSCAPE LEADS TO DISPUTES IN OWNERSHIP. IN MANY MORE CASES, CONSERVED LANDS WERE NEVER PROPERLY RECORDED OR HAD BOUNDARIES BASED ON EPHEMERAL LANDMARKS. THE INSTITUTE IS WORKING TO ENSURE THAT LANDS IN WHICH THE PUBLIC HAS INVESTED ARE LESS VULNERABLE TO ADVERSE POSSESSION, SALE, DEVELOPMENT, DEGRADATION BY PROVIDING PROPER DELINEATION, RECORDING, AND MONITORING.
DELAWARE RIVER WATERSHED INITIATIVE - AGREEMENT WITH THE WILLIAM PENN FOUNDATION: THE PINCHOT INSTITUTE'S BIRTHPLACE IS AT GREY TOWERS NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, NEAR THE BEND OF THE DELAWARE RIVER WHERE NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, AND PENNSYLVANIA MEET. THE DELAWARE RIVER WATERSHED INCLUDES PORTIONS OF THESE STATES AND DELAWARE, AND PROVIDES DRINKING WATER AND ENERGY FOR MORE THAN 16 MILLION PEOPLE, 5% OF THE U.S. AND MUCH MORE OF OUR ECONOMY. THE INSTITUTE WORKS WITH THE WILLIAM PENN FOUNDATION TO CONSERVE FORESTS THAT PROTECT THE DELAWARE RIVER. WE WORK WITH LANDOWNERS TO PROTECT THEIR LANDS, AND PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THE COORDINATION OF LAND PROTECTION AND WATER QUALITY MONITORING.
U.S. FOREST SERVICE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT - LANDSCAPE SCALE CONSERVATION PLANNING IN THE DELAWARE RIVER WATERSHED: THE INSTITUTE'S COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE COMPLEMENTS WORK WITH THE WILLIAM PENN FOUNDATION AND PARTNERS IN THE BASIN. WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE FOREST SERVICE THE INSTITUTE HAS HELPED LANDOWNERS DEVELOP MANAGEMENT PLANS THAT INCREASE CARBON STORAGE AND PROTECT STREAMS, DOING SO IN AREAS WHERE FORESTS ARE MOST VULNERABLE AND IN WATERSHEDS THAT ARE CRITICAL TO MAINTAINING HIGH WATER QUALITY THROUGHOUT THE BASIN. THE INSTITUTE HAS ALSO HELPED STRATEGIZE HOW TO BEST TARGET AND RECRUIT FOREST LANDOWNERS WHOSE FORESTS MIGHT BE ELIGIBLE FOR ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO PROVIDE FOREST CARBON OFFSETS.
