Organizations Filed Purposes: WE ARE MEMBERS OF THE WATERKEEPER ALLIANCE, AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION WITH MORE THAN 350 RIVERKEEPERS AS MEMBERS. WE HAVE 3 RIVERKEEPERS, THE UPPER POTOMAC, THE POTOMAC, AND THE SHENANDOAH, WHO WORK TO PROTECT 14,700 SQUARE MILES OF WATERSHED, WHICH PROVIDES RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND SERVES AS THE DRINKING WATER SOURCE FOR ALMOST 6 MILLION PEOPLE. RIVERKEEPERS ARE THE EXPERTS IN THEIR RIVERS, THEIR EYES AND EARS, THEIR VOICE, THEIR ADVOCATES. RIVERKEEPERS PROTECT THE PUBLIC'S RIGHT TO CLEAN WATER THROUGH ASSESSMENT, ADVOCACY, AND ENFORCEMENT. WE STEP IN TO STOP POLLUTION WHEN OTHERS FAIL TO DO. WE LEVERAGE MORE THAN $1 MILLION IN PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES EVERY YEAR

TO STOP POLLUTION AND TO RESTORE CLEAN WATER IN THE POTOMAC AND SHENANDOAH RIVERS AND THEIR TRIBUTARIES THROUGH ENFORCEMENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.

WATERSHED PROTECTION - WE IDENTIFY SOURCES OF POLLUTION AND FIGURE OUT HOW TO STOP THEM. WE REGULARLY PATROL THE RIVERS WE WORK TO PROTECT. WE RESPOND TO TIPS AND COMPLAINTS. WE REVIEW PAPER RECORDS - LIKE DISCHARGE MONITORING REPORTS AND INSPECTION REPORTS - TO DETERMINE WHETHER VIOLATIONS HAVE OCCURRED. WE COLLECT EVIDENCE - WATER QUALITY SAMPLES, PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOS, VICTIM'S INTERVIEWS, AND BUILD THE CASE WE NEED TO STOP THE POLLUTION. AND WE ORGANIZE - WE LISTEN TO COMMUNITIES ALONG THE RIVER AND WORK WITH THEM TO STOP THE PROBLEMS ABOUT WHICH THEY CARE THE MOST. WE BUILT GRASSROOTS SUPPORT FOR CLEAN WATER THROUGH STEWARDSHIP -- RIVERPALOOZA AND RIOPALOOZA.

LOWER POTOMAC: WE PUSHED THROUGH AN AGGRESSIVE PLAN TO STOP RAW SEWAGE DISCHARGES INTO THE POTOMAC IN ALEXANDRIA BY 2025. WE STOPPED DOMINION ENERGY FROM ALLOWING TOXIC COAL ASH PITS TO LEAK INTO POTOMAC RIVER AND CONTAMINATE NEARBY DRINKING WATER WELLS. WE LAUNCHED THE FIRST CITIZEN LED WATER QUALITY MONITORING ON THE POTOMAC RIVER IN DC, MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA.

UPPER POTOMAC: WE HALTED CONSTRUCTION OF FRACKED GAS PIPELINE IN MARYLAND THAT WOULD HAVE THREATENED THE RIVER, TAKEN PUBLIC PARKLAND, AND RISKED PUBLIC HEALTH TO CARRY FRACKED GAS TO OTHER STATES, NOT TO PEOPLE IN MD. WE INVESTIGATED AND TOOK ACTION TO STOP POLLUTION CAUSED BY A BASALT MINE, A PAPER MILL, AND A SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT.
