Organizations Filed Purposes: The PTO work focuses on the following: CONNECTING: Provide community building opportunities for families to get to know each other through efforts such as new parent outreach, community events like our new Back-to-School BBQ and forums such all-parent PTO meetings, this newsletter, and our listserv. SUPPORTING: Supporting Van Ness through organizing the school's volunteer needs, making sure teachers and staff know they are appreciated, and providing administrative support. FUNDING: Support Van Ness through raising money at fundraising events, building partnerships with local businesses, and family donations. Additionally, Van Ness Elementary partners with Transend to create a powerful elementary school model that has the potential to transform elementary education in the District of Columbia and-when fully realized-the nation (Whole Child Collaborative).

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit open to any current Van Ness teacher, parent, or guardian. All current families are automatically part of the PTO. The PTO is guided by a a board of elected parents/guardians and appointed teachers who work together to enable ideas that support our school and raise money for teacher support, field trips, and community-building events. Whole Child Collaborative - Van Ness Elementary school's approach to Student Well-Being as well as the building and strengthening of their academic model where young students are makers and owners of their own learning. Van Ness Elementary working to codify their SEL approach through their website which serves as a critical resource for the school leaders and teachers piloting the approach. Van Ness Elementary will also begin to codify their approach to Maker-centered learning which builds students' understanding that nearly everything in the world is designed and -- if and when it is not working for them -- it can be redesigned. Support provided by Education Leaders of Color, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and New Schools Venture Fund.

Supporting our Teachers and Students - Classroom supplies, field trips, support from a socio-emotional behavior expert, math coaching for students, technology for online learning, teacher training costs (including travel).

Community Building - Back to School BBQ, Food and childcare for back to school night and PTO meeting, food support for families impacted by COVID-19 pandemic, uniforms for students.
