OUT TEACH EMPOWERS TEACHERS WITH EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OUTDOORS TO UNLOCK STUDENT PERFORMANCE.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING & SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS: TO PROVIDE CHILDREN WITH STEM AND 21ST CENTURY SKILLS, OUT TEACH EMPOWERS TEACHERS IN LOW INCOME SCHOOLS TO LEAD EXPERIENTIAL SCIENCE LESSONS OUTDOORS. WE PROVIDE GROUP TRAININGS, JOB-EMBEDDED COACHING, PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES, AND ONLINE RESOURCES TO HELP TEACHERS LEAD ENGAGING HANDS-ON SCIENCE LESSONS AND EMBED SCIENCE INTO MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS. TO SUPPORT TEACHERS THROUGH THE PANDEMIC, WE CREATED AT-HOME LESSONS, PROVIDED DIRECT-TO-STUDENT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES, AND EXPANDED OUR TRAINING OFFERINGS TO EMBED EFFECTIVE. OUTDOOR INSTRUCTION INTO REMOTE TEACHING AND LEARNING. IN FY2020, THE OUT TEACH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM TRAINED 2,009 TEACHERS, IMPACTING 50,225 STUDENTS.
OUTDOOR LEARNING TOOLS: TO ENSURE TEACHERS IN LOW-INCOME ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE EQUIPPED TO LEAD HANDS-ON, CROSS-CURRICULAR LESSONS OUTDOORS, WE PARTNER WITH COMPANIES TO BUILD AND ENHANCE OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, WE DESIGNED LEARN-FROM-HOME KITS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON OUTDOOR STEM LEARNING OPPORTUNITES. TO IMPROVE SAFETY DURING IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION, WE SHARED BEST PRACTICES ON OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION WITH DISTRICT AND SCHOOL LEADERS. THIS YEAR, WE RECRUITED 900 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP US CONSTRUCT AND IMPROVE 11 NEW OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS. TO DATE, OUT TEACH HAS BUILT 156 OUTDOOR LEARNING LABS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE ALSO ADVISE SCHOOLS AND DISTRICTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR OUTDOOR SPACES TO BETTER SUPPORT HANDS-ON OUTDOOR INSTRUCTION.
PROMOTING BROADER CHANGE: OUT TEACH AUTHORED ARTICLES, JOINED LARGER NONPROFIT COALITIONS, AND PARTICIPATED IN WEBINARS ON HOW DISTRICTS CAN USE OUTDOOR SPACES TO IMPROVE SAFETY WHILE ACCELERATING LEARNING DURING THE PANDEMIC. OUT TEACH REGULARLY CONDUCTS EXTENSIVE RESEARCH AND PRESENTS AT NATIONAL CONFERENCES TO RAISE AWARENESS AROUND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY SCIENCE INSTRUCTION AND THE EFFICACY OF HANDS-ON LEARNING OUTDOORS. OUT TEACH ALSO WORKS TO PLACE STORIES IN MEDIA OUTLETS THAT INFORM COMMUNITIES AND EDUCATION DECISION-MAKERS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OUTDOORS AND THE RESULTS THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED.
