Organizations Filed Purposes:
Legal Services - Clinical legal education. The Organization's mission is to provide free or low-cost, high-quality legal assistance and representation to low-income Washington, D.C. residents who are unable to afford a lawyer and to train law students in lawyering and courtroom advocacy skills and instill in them a commitment to pro bono service.
Legal and Social Work Services Clinical Legal Education: We provide legal advice, referral as well as limited and full legal representation and social work services to indigent and low-income District residents in multiple practice areas. The majority of the civil legal work we perform is in landlord-tenant and housing cases, including eviction defense, rent control and subsidized housing-related matters in the landlord-tenant court and before administrative tribunals. We also represent respondents in civil protection order matters pending in the domestic violence branch of our local trial court. For a short period during the fiscal year, we operated an immigration defense program. Our criminal program provided representation to adults in misdemeanor trial and appellate matters. Finally, we provide representation to clients in cases related to the sealing of criminal arrest and/or conviction records. Our clinical legal education program includes students from multiple area law schools who participate in a structured program of instruction designed to teach them lawyering skills while working on actual cases under the supervision and guidance of experienced attorney/educators. We also operate a clinical training program for social work students from area universities who provide services to our clients under the supervision and guidance of an experienced social work educator who is also an attorney. By providing legal and social work services to indigent and low income people, we advance the administration of justice in the local courts and D.C. agencies. Additionally, we assist the legal profession by participating in educational and mentoring programs for students and volunteer lawyers in the areas of housing and other civil legal matters, and until recently, criminal law.
