EDUCATION LEADS HOME:PROGRAM GOAL: EDUCATION LEADS HOME IS A MULTI-YEAR, NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL AND LIFE OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS, WITH 3 GOALS:1) YOUNG CHILDREN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS WILL PARTICIPATE IN QUALITY EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS AT THE SAME RATE AS THEIR HOUSED PEERS BY 2026,2) HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL REACH A GRADUATION RATE OF AT LEAST 90% BY 2030, AND3) POST-SECONDARY STUDENTS WILL REACH AN ATTAINMENT RATE OF AT LEAST 60% BY 2034.PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: DIRECT, PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE TO STATE AND LOCAL EDUCATIONAL AGENCIES, CHARTER SCHOOLS, INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION, AND EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THROUGH LOCAL CONVENINGS, WEBINARS, PUBLICATIONS, AND PARTNERSHIPS; OUR STATE PARTNERSHIPS ON STUDENT HOMELESSNESS, WHICH GRANTED $120,000 TO 6 STATES TO ADVANCE EDUCATION LEADS HOME GOALS; ORIGINAL RESEARCH ON THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF HOMELESSNESS ON STUDENTS, INCLUDING STUDENTS OF COLOR AND LGBTQ YOUTH, AND STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE THEM; ACTION PLANNING WITH SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO ADVANCE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF FEDERAL AND STATE EDUCATION POLICIES ON STUDENT HOMELESSNESS.

ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC POLICY:PROGRAM GOAL: SHC TAKES A GRASSROOTS APPROACH TO ADVANCING EDUCATION, HOUSING, AND INCOME POLICY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS, WITH A FOCUS ON EQUITY.PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: IN 2019, OUR ADVOCACY OBTAINED RECORD FUNDING FOR THE EDUCATION FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN AND YOUTH PROGRAM. WE WORKED WITH BIPARTISAN COALITIONS TO ADVANCE HIGHER EDUCATION, INCOME TAX, AND HOUSING LEGISLATION. WE ALSO PARTNERED THE ADMINISTRATION FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AT HHS TO CRAFT THEIR WORK ON CHILD, YOUTH AND FAMILY HOMELESSNESS. OUR POLICY WORK WILL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON INCREASED RESOURCES AND RIGHTS FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES.

BUILDING TEAMS FOR CHANGE:PROGRAM GOAL: TO ADVANCE A YOUTH HOMELESSNESS STATE POLICY FRAMEWORK ROOTED IN THE REALITIES OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES, REPRESENTING LOCALLY-DEVISED SOLUTIONS.PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: IN 2019, WE PARTNERED WITH STATE AND LOCAL ADVOCATES, INCLUDING YOUTH, TO HELP GET 23 BILLS IN 14 STATES INTRODUCED, WITH 14 BECOMING LAW. THESE NEW STATE LAWS WILL DIRECTLY IMPACT 605,700 YOUTH, MAKING SPECIFIC, TANGIBLE IMPROVEMENTS IN THEIR LIVES. WE HELPED BUILD YOUTH HOMELESSNESS ADVOCACY CAPACITY IN 22 STATES AND RAISED THE VOICES OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN STATE LEGISLATURES AND AGENCIES.
