TO ENHANCE THE LIVES AND EXPAND THE OPPORTUNITIES OF CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND ADULTS OF THE SHAW COMMUNITY IN WASHINGTON, D.C. SCM OFFERS ARTS AND HUMANITIES PROGRAMS, PERFORMING ARTS, MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCTION EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, POSITIVE YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMMING TO LOW INCOME, MINORITY CHILDREN AND YOUTH.
PERFORMING ARTS AND MEDIA PRODUCTION EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS WE PROVIDE YEAR-ROUND AFTERSCHOOL/CAMP PROGRAMS THAT SERVE 150 LOW-INCOME, MINORITY YOUTH, AGES 5-21, INCLUDING: STRUCTURED EDUCATIONAL AND ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES, MEALS AND SNACKS, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL ASSET BUILDING, PREPARING YOUTH FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, THE WORKFORCE, AND THE CHALLENGES OF SYSTEMIC RACISM. WE ENGAGE OUR YOUTH IN TUTORING AND ENRICHMENT SERVICES, SOFT AND LIFE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES, CULTURAL IDENTITY AND PLACEKEEPING STUDIES, MARTIAL ARTS, DANCE CLASSES, THE PERFORMING ARTS, AND STEM INSTRUCTION. RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL MEDIA LITERACY, SCM OFFERS TRAINING FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS IN A RANGE OF COMPUTER SKILLS AND MEDIA ARTS PROGRAMS BY PROVIDING BASIC MEDIA LITERACY, VIDEOGRAPHY, VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY SKILLS, AND AFRO-CENTRIC DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES. BY SERVING AS A DIRECT EMPLOYER OF DOZENS OF RESIDENTS OVER THE YEARS, WE ALSO REACH YOUNG ADULTS AND PARENTS AND SEEK ADDITIONAL WAYS TO DEVELOP WORKFORCE AND FINANCIAL LITERACY SKILLS AMONG THE FAMILIES OF SHAW.
SUMMER CAMPS DUE TO COVID OUR SIX-WEEK SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM WAS VIRTUAL THIS YEAR. THE DAILY SCHEDULE INCLUDED 4.5 HOURS OF GUIDED ACTIVITIES, INTERSPERSED WITH BREAKS FOR MEALS AND SNACKS FOR A TOTAL OF 6.5 HOURS OF CONNECTIVITY. THE GUIDED ACTIVITIES IN LARGE PART FOLLOWED OUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING AND INCLUDED READING, TEAM BUILDING, LIFE SKILLS, ARTS & CRAFTS, GAMES, MUSIC, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, STRUCTURED EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT AND DIGITAL LITERACY CLASSES. THE CAMP ALSO HAD A SOCIO-EMOTIONAL COMPONENT THAT ALLOWED CAMPERS TO EXPRESS CONCERNS ABOUT COVID IN A SAFE SPACE.
College Scholarship Program In order to encourage Shaw residents to complete their goals for higher education, SCMs college scholarship program awards $1,000 - $3,000 per year to deserving Shaw neighborhood students who are graduating high school or attending college. Students are selected through a well-established application process, written essays, transcripts, SAT scores, and interviews.
