THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE A FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS GRADES FIFTH THROUGH EIGHTH IN WARD 5. DESPITE LOCATION, IT IS AN OPEN ENROLLMENT SCHOOL OPEN TO ANY WASHINGTON, DC RESIDENT. THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOOL PLANS TO BEGIN WITH 75 FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS WHO WILL MATRICULATE TO EIGHTH GRADE, ADDING 75 STUDENTS EACH YEAR UNTIL REACHING FULL CAPACITY AT 300 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS.
THE MISSION OF THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOOL (SJS) IS TO CATALYZE AN INTEGRATED COMMUNITY OF MIDDLE-SCHOOL LEARNERS TO BE SCHOLAR-ACTIVISTS WHO ARE DESIGNERS OF A MORE JUST WORLD.
THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOOL'S SUMMER 2018 PILOT 4-WEEK FREEDOM ACADEMY FOCUSED ON USING THE SCHOOL'S LIBERATORYDESIGN THINKING PROCESS AS WELL AS COMMON CORE MATH AND ELA STANDARDS TO TACKLE INTERDISCIPLINARY SOCIAL JUSTICE DESIGN CHALLENGES. THIS YEAR, THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOOL HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP ITS MODEL WITH THE AIM OF SUBMITTING A CHARTER SCHOOL APPLICATION TO THE WASHINGTON DC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD.
