Organizations Filed Purposes:
SOLUTIONS IN HOMETOWN CONNECTIONS (SHC) ENGAGES WITH REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANTS IN DC, MD AND VA. SHC SUPPORTS INDIVIDUAL AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGH A NETWORK OF MENTORS, TUTORS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS. SHC'S GOAL IS FOR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS TO DEVELOP THE SOCIAL CAPITAL TO ACCESS THESE SERVICES INDEPENDENTLY AND BEGIN PARTICIPATING FULLY IN THEIR NEW COMMUNITIES.
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER PROGRAM (ELLP) IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM THAT CREATES A SAFE, FRIENDLY AND COMFORTABLE SPACE FOR MOTHERS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT YET IN SCHOOL, TO TAKE ENGLISH CLASSES AND ENGAGE WITH OTHERS. WHILE MOTHERS LEARN ENGLISH, THEIR CHILDREN ENGAGE IN AGE-APPROPRIATE ACTIVITIES THAT WILL PREPARE THEM FOR TRANSITION TO FORMAL PRE-SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS. TO DATE 216 WOMEN HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM WITH THEIR COMBINED 164 CHILDREN (5 YEARS AND YOUNGER).
THE BACK TO SCHOOL UNIFORM AND SUPPLY DRIVE PROGRAM (BTS) IS AN ANNUAL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES STUDENTS FROM REFUGEE & IMMIGRANT FAMILIES IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD COMMUNITIES WITH REQUIRED SUPPLIES AND UNIFORM CLOTHING ITEMS. THE 2019 EVENT WAS HELD AT TWO APARTMENT COMPLEXES WHERE MANY FAMILIES SERVED BY SHC LIVE. DISTRIBUTION OF ITEMS WAS MADE BY SHC STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS. DURING THE EVENT 200 BACKPACKS AND 400 CLOTHING ITEMS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES.
THE IN HOME TUTOR PROGRAM PROVIDED ONE ON ONE ENGLISH TUTORING SUPPORT FOR REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS SERVED BY SHC. EXPENSES INCLUDED PURCHASE OF TUTOR SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS TO BE USED WITH STUDENTS DURING TUTORING SESSIONS AND PAYMENT TO AN INSTRUCTOR TO LEAD TUTOR TRAINING AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR SHC TUTORS. TO DATE, THERE ARE 88 VOLUNTEER TUTORS PARTICIPATING IN THE IN HOME TUTOR PROGRAM.
