To find, train and educate students who show excellence in their artistic potential for ballet.
Ballet Department:The ballet department conducted a very successful Final Exam during March 11-15, 2019. The students performed exceptionally well in all categories.At the Spring Gala (May 29-30, 2019), the students successfully performed various classical and contemporary works. The Winter Gala performance of The Nutcracker (Dec 13th and 14th, 2019) was completely Sold Out for both performances. We also performed the Nutcracker production in below venues: Mormon Temple of Washington DC (Nov 16th, 2019), World Bank (Dec 14th, 2019), Russian School Olympas (Dec 14th, 2019).Music Department:In the spring of 2019, the music department began offering music courses and piano instruction. In August of 2019, we hosted its inaugural Kirov International Music Festival, a weeklong series of masterclasses and competition. For its jury and teaching faculty, the Academy recruited internationally acclaimed masters of piano and violin from all over the globe, including representatives of The Juilliard School, Moscow State Conservatory, the Glenn Gould School, Seoul National University, and the Maria Canals International Music Competition. Close to 40 students from the United States, South Korea, China, and Mexico were chosen by audition to participate in the festival, and to perform in a closing concert at the John F. Kennedy Center. Through a partnership with the Moscow State Conservatory arranged by President Moon, competition winners were invited to perform and study at the Moscow State Conservatory in September, 2019.In December, 2019 the music department initiated the Gifted & Talented (GT) Program, and the Legendary Masterclass Series to empower prodigies to use their skills to contribute to building a better world. Professor Gary Graffman from the Curtis Institute of Music provided the first Masterclass.Academic Department:The academic program expanded during this year into teaching Music Theory, Music History, Music Appreciation, World Music, Russian language, Introductory Korean, AP US History, AP Math, French 3rd level. The academic program attracted 10 Serving Our Children Scholarship local DC students.6th grade was opened this year with 2 year-round ballet students and 4 local SOC DC students. The academic standard of the academic commuters has improved over the years in the majority of cases. Holding them to a higher standard than in the public schools, along with offering them tutoring from teachers as well as their peers, has stimulated them to 'step up to the plate.'Residence Life Department:Resident life department took care of resident students 24/7. Our qualified kitchen staff created the menu to make sure that all our students receive the food that they need, and when students are sick, we prepare special food and bring it to their rooms. We provided daily activities such as arts and crafts, table games, cooking classes, and hosted several parties for Valentine's Day, Halloween, Christmas.Wellness Department:With the implementation of two nurses to the wellness team, students have had more access to healthcare more hours of the day. The wellness department continues to use Magnus as our electronic health system that safely and effectively documents student conditions. We have maintained our relationship with Dr. Kessous from Montgomery Sports Medicine Center as our orthopedic consultant. We have even just established a relationship with his nutritionist as an added benefit to our dancers.The wellness department has more efficient emergency management, ongoing staff training, and much-improved reported Immunization compliance with the DC Department of Health. We also established close collaboration with Adolescent Health Center at Children's Hospital and ongoing improvement of the student's and supportive personnel knowledge on health maintenance, nutrition, injury, and illness prevention.Lastly, we added one counselor to the wellness team, who has developed a rapport with many of the students. We have one nurse as a full-time and on-call staff and another part-time nurse.Facilities Department:The Academy building is old, which continues to have ongoing renovation projects with the aim of enhancing the already immaculate building and maintaining its functionality. This department has completed the following: Replacement of the Boiler and Domestic Hot Water Heater, Painting the entire building, Re-Carpeting the entire building (except B1 hall), Renovation of Boys Dormitories and Bathrooms, 15 bathrooms tile and floor refinish, Replacement of Dormitory Hall, Studio projector for scenes, Replacement of Studio Cyc, All 5 Studio Flooring Replacement, Purchase of a 32-seat bus and a 4x4 truck with a snow plow, Replacement of a refrigerator and a freezer, Replacement of convection ovens, and Replacement of all studio lighting tubes. We have utilized local companies in the completion of some of these projects.
