RULE OF LAW PROGRAM - AMERICAN LAW STUDENTS FROM YALE, DUKE, THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA AND GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT CHINA'S LEGAL SYSTEM THROUGH LAW CLASSES AT ELITE CHINESE UNIVERSITIES, VISITS TO COURTS, AND INTERACTIVE DISCUSSIONS WITH LAWYERS, GOVERNMENT AND NON-GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS, PROFESSORS, AND LAW STUDENTS. THIS YEAR, THE FELLOWS VISITED HONG KONG, SHENZHEN, SHANGHAI, AND BEIJING OVER THE COURSE OF TWO WEEKS. THE PROGRAM COMPLETED ITS FOURTH YEAR.THE 12TH YEAR OF USAI'S RULE OF LAW PROGRAM FOR CHINESE LAW STUDENTS TOOK PLACE FROM JUNE 24 TO JULY 19. THE PROGRAM HOSTS A SMALL GROUP OF ENGLISH-FLUENT CHINESE LAW STUDENTS IN WASHINGTON, DC TO MEET US JUDGES AND OFFICIALS. SINCE 2008, A TOTAL OF 53 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED. THROUGH INTERACTIVE DISCUSSIONS WITH CONGRESSIONAL STAFF MEMBERS, FEDERAL JUDGES, ADVISORS FROM ORGANIZATIONS AND FEDERAL OFFICES, AND INDIVIDUALS FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS, THE STUDENTS ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE LEGAL AND POLITICAL SYSTEMS OF THE UNITED STATES.THEY AVERAGE SIX MEETINGS PER DAY DURING THEIR MONTH IN DC. WHEN NOT IN MEETINGS, THEY VISIT MUSEUMS AND LANDMARKS, JOIN CULTURAL AND SOCIAL EVENTS (E.G., JULY 4 FIREWORKS, BASEBALL GAMES, BACKYARD BBQS, BIRTHDAY PARTIES), AND GAIN LIFELONG IMPRESSIONS AND FRIENDS. THIS YEAR'S RULE OF LAW FELLOWS INCLUDED 6 STUDENTS.
RECEPTIONS: LUNAR NEW YEAR - USAI AND MORE THAN 450 FRIENDS FROM CONGRESS, THE ADMINISTRATION, THE DIPLOMATIC COMMUNITY, BUSINESS AND ACADEMIA WELCOMED THE YEAR OF THE PIG WITH A RECEPTION ON CAPITOL HILL. REPRESENTATIVES FROM SEVERAL OF THE EMBASSIES USAI WORKS WITH INCLUDING THE AMBASSADORS FROM BRUNEI, CAMBODIA, LAOS, AND VIETNAM; THE DEPUTY CHIEFS OF MISSION FROM SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA, AND INDONESIA AND THE HEAD OF CONGRESSIONAL AFFAIRS FROM CHINA, JAPAN, KOREA, PHILIPPINES AND HONG KONG ATTENDED. SEVERAL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SPOKE ALONG WITH SARAH KEMP REPRESENTING THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION. MAY 2 - USAI-AMCHAM CONGRESSIONAL STAFF RECEPTION - THIS RECEPTION WELCOMED THE AMCHAM CHINA DELEGATION TO WASHINGTON, D.C., AND WELCOMED BACK THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S INSTITUTE OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS (CPIFA) DELEGATIONS 120, 121, 122, 123, AND 124. BEN WU, VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF USAI, AND TIMOTHY STRATFORD, CHAIRMAN OF AMCHAM CHINA, PROVIDED OPENING REMARKS, AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FIVE DELEGATIONS SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCES AND STORIES.
