PLATFORMS FOR ADVANCED WIRELESS RESEARCH PLATFORMS FOR ADVANCED WIRELESS RESEARCH (PAWR) ENABLES EXPERIMENTAL EXPLORATION OF ROBUST NEW WIRELESS DEVICES THAT WILL REVOLUTIONIZE THE NATION'S WIRELESS ECOSYSTEM WHILE SUSTAINING US LEADERSHIP AND ECONOMIC COMPETITIVENESS FOR DECADES TO COME. PAWR IS FUNDED BY NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) AND THE PAWR INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM REPRESENTING 30+ OF THE NATION'S LEADING COMPANIES AND ASSOCIATIONS IN WIRELESS. THE PLATFORM FOR ADVANCED WIRELESS RESEARCH PROJECT OFFICE (PPO) MANAGES THE $100 MILLION PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP AND OVERSEES THE RESEARCH PLATFORMS. THE PPO IS CO-LED BY US IGNITE AND NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY. MAJOR 2019 ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:*IN SEPTEMBER 2019, NSF/THE PAWR PPO ISSUED ONE PLATFORM AWARD - AERPAW. THE AERPAW PROJECT IS LED BY NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH WIRELESS RESEARCH CENTER OF NORTH CAROLINA, MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY AND RENAISSANCE COMPUTING INSTITUTE (RENCI) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. *IN SEPTEMBER 2019, THE PPO ISSUED AN RFP FOR THE FOURTH PLATFORM.THIS RFP SOUGHT PROPOSALS TO TRANSFORM THE DEPLOYMENT AND OPERATIONS OF FAST, LOW-LATENCY, AND RELIABLE BROADBAND NETWORKS IN RURAL AND OTHER LOW-DENSITY GEOGRAPHIC AREAS IN AN EFFICIENT AND AFFORDABLE WAY. IN DECEMBER 2019, NUMEROUS PROPOSALS WERE SUBMITTED TO THE PPO. IN 2020, THE PPO EXPECTS TO RECOMMEND PROPOSALS TO NSF, ISSUE SUBAWARDS TO THE FINALISTS, AND REVIEW THE SUBMITTED PLATFORM DESIGN DOCUMENT AND PROJECT EXECUTION PLANS OF THE FINALISTS. THE FINAL AWARD(S) WILL BE MADE IN JANUARY 2021. * HE POWDER AND COSMOS PLATFORMS (AWARDED IN 2018) ARE AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCHER EXPERIMENTATION. *IN SEPTEMBER 2019, THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) DESIGNATED THE FIRST-EVER INNOVATION ZONES FOR EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH TO THE TWO EXISTING PAWR TESTBEDS IN SALT LAKE CITY AND THE WEST HARLEM NEIGHBORHOOD OF NEW YORK CITY.

THE US IGNITE SMART GIGABIT COMMUNITIES (SGC) PROJECT IS A NETWORK OF MORE THAN TWO DOZEN COMMUNITIES DEVELOPING A CATALOG OF APPLICATIONS TO ADDRESS SMART CITY AND INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) CHALLENGES. WITH THE BENEFIT OF HIGHCAPACITY AND LOWLATENCY NETWORKING TECHNOLOGIES, THESE COMMUNITIES ARE SOLVING MODERNDAY DILEMMAS AND DEVELOPING THEIR OWN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEMS FOCUSED ON IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE AND BOOSTING LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. MAJOR 2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:*GROWING THE SGC ECOSYSTEM: US IGNITE IS ASSISTING SGC COMMUNITIES BY PROVIDING IDEAS, EDUCATION, AND RESOURCES FOR FUNDING AND DEPLOYMENT. *FOSTERING GIGABIT APPLICATIONS: GIGABIT APPLICATIONS AND POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS WERE CREATED OR IDENTIFIED FOR NSF FUNDED SGCS. DEVELOPED OR IDENTIFIED A CUMULATIVE 159+ GIGABIT APPLICATIONS SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THE PROJECT.*EXPANDING SMART CITY STRATEGY: AS US IGNITE BEGAN THIS YEAR OF THE PROJECT, WE NOTED THERE WERE OTHER NSF-RESEARCH-DRIVEN ADVANTAGES NOW AVAILABLE TO SMART AND CONNECTED COMMUNITIES. WE BEGAN OPENING THE DOOR EVEN WIDER TO OTHER SMART CITY TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS MACHINE LEARNING, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, BIG DATA, AND THE SECURITY SUCH SYSTEMS NEED TO BE DEPLOYED IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES*ENSURING LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY: US IGNITE DISCUSSED SUSTAINABILITY PLANS FOR THE SGC COMMUNITIES TO HELP ENSURE THAT GIGABIT APPLICATION EFFORTS WILL CONTINUE WITHIN THE COMMUNITIES AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THIS PROJECT. *HOLDING GIGABIT APPLICATION EVENTS: US IGNITE PLANNED APPLICATION-DEVELOPMENT RELATED EVENTS IN SEVERAL COMMUNITIES THIS YEAR TO FOSTER THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMART CITY APPLICATIONS. ADDITIONALLY, US IGNITE HOSTED ITS 7TH US IGNITE APPLICATION SUMMIT THAT BROUGHT TOGETHER 1,700 PEOPLE FROM OVER 250 COMMUNITIES AND THEIR RESPECTIVE LEADERSHIP TO PROSPECT AND PARTNER WITH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICE PROVIDERS, LINKING PROGRESSIVE*SHARING INFORMATION WITH SGC COMMUNITIES: US IGNITE PUBLISHED NEWSLETTERS TO SHARE SGC NEWS AND SPOTLIGHTS AND ANNOUNCE POTENTIAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FROM THE GOVERNMENT, FOUNDATIONS, AND OTHER SOURCES. US IGNITE WORKED WITH ITS SGC COMMUNITIES TO FIND AND PURSUE FEDERAL, STATE, AND FOUNDATION GRANT OPPORTUNITIES RELATED TO GIGABIT, BROADBAND, AND SMART CITY EFFORTS.

FORT CARSON TRANSPORTATION TESTBEDTHE FORT CARSON SMART TRANSPORTATION TESTBED IS A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO TEST THE VIABILITY OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES AND SENSOR-BASED TECHNOLOGIES IN AN EFFORT TO: REDUCE MILITARY TRANSPORTATION COSTS, DELIVER FASTER SERVICES ON SITE, AND IMPROVE OVERALL PUBLIC SAFETY. THE PROGRAM IS A JOINT EFFORT OF US IGNITE, FORT CARSON, THE CITY OF COLORADO SPRINGS, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO'S RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING CENTER FOR UNMANNED VEHICLES (RECUV). IT IS FUNDED AND MANAGED BY THE U.S. ARMY ENGINEER RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER (ERDC).*US IGNITE LAUNCHED THE PROGRAM IN AUGUST 2019. PHASE ONE OF THE PROGRAM WILL BEGIN WITH THE DEPLOYMENT OF UP TO TWO AUTOMATED SHUTTLES ON SITE. AS THE PROGRAM DEVELOPS, THE RESEARCH TEAM WILL ALSO EXPLORE ON AND OFF-POST AUTOMATED DELIVERY VEHICLES AND SHUTTLES.*US IGNITE RELEASED SEVERAL RFPS TO SELECT VENDORS FOR THE LAUNCH OF THE MOUNTAIN EXPRESS AUTOMATED SHUTTLE. THESE RFPS INCLUDED AN RFP FOR NETWORK ENGINEERING SERVICES AND AN RFP FOR AN ON BASE VEHICLE PARTNER. US IGNITE PLANS TO RELEASE ADDITIONAL RFPS IN 2020, INCLUDING AN RFP FOR A SERVICE VEHICLE PILOT AND A SECOND RFP FOR ENGINEERING SERVICES.
