THE U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL DEVELOPS AND CONNECTS DIVERSE LEADERS TO CREATE A STRONG U.S.-JAPAN RELATIONSHIP. IT DEVELOPS THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS BY OFFERING LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE PARTICIPATNS TO CONTRIBUTE TO A STRONGER U.S.-JAPAN RELATIONSHP; AND IT BELIEVES IN SERVICE AND IS COMMITTED TO ACTION IN AREAS WHERE MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES AND EXPERIENCES CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
THE U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL DEVELOPS AND CONNECTS DIVERSE LEADERS TO CREATE A STRONG U.S.-JAPAN RELATIONSHIP. FOUNDED BY JAPANESE AMERICANS, THE COUNCIL BRINGS TOGETHER LEADERS OF THE UNITED STATES AND JAPAN FROM ACROSS BACKGROUNDS, SECTORS AND GENERATIONS TO PARTNER FOR A BETTER FUTURE FOR THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION AND BEYOND.
THE TOMODACHI INITIATIVE IS A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP, LED BY USJC IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE U.S. EMBASSY IN TOKYO WITH SUPPORT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN. TOMODACHI INVESTS IN THE NEXT GENERATION OF JAPANESE AND AMERICAN YOUTH THROUGH EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. FINANCIAL SUPPORT IS PROVIDED BY CORPORATIONS, ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE U.S. AND JAPAN. IN 2012, THE U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL (JAPAN) WAS CREATED TO SUPPORT THE ADMINISTRATION OF TOMODACHI IN JAPAN. USJC (JAPAN) IS A REGISTERED PUBLIC INTEREST CORPORATION (KOEKI ZAIDAN HOJIN) AND MAINTAINS OFFICES IN TOKYO. IN 2019, TOMODACHI PROGRAM AND EVENT PARTICIPANTS TOTALED 830 YOUNG PEOPLE IN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES THROUGH 28 PROGRAMS. SINCE INCEPTION, MORE THAN 8,600 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN TOMODACHI PROGRAMS ACROSS MULTIPLE STATES AND PREFECTURESAND OVER 44,100 EVENT AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS FROM INCEPTION THROUGH DECEMBER 2019.MAJOR TOMODACHI PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY USJC (US) IN 2019 INCLUDED:TOMODACHI SUMMER SOFTBANK LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - SINCE 2012, 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM TOHOKU PARTICIPATED IN A 3-WEEK LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT UC BERKELEY. PARTICIPANTS LEARN ABOUT Y-PLAN (YOUTH, PLAN, ACTION, NOW!), A PROJECT-BASED CIVIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO ADDRESS REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. TOMODACHI PRUDENTIAL ALUMNI LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM SUPPORTS AN ALUMNI NETWORK OF TOMODACHI PARTICIPANTS FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF A TOMODACHI PROGRAM. ALUMNI REMAIN CONNECTED TO A COMMUNITY THROUGH REGIONAL NETWORKS, ON-GOING PROGRAMS AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES.TOMODACHI METLIFE WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - 50 FEMALE JAPANESE UNDERGRADUATES AND 50 JAPANESE MID-LEVEL, CAREERPROFESSIONAL WOMEN ARE PAIRED TO BUILD STRONG MENTOR-MENTEE RELATIONSHIPS OVER TEN-MONTHS. FINAL PRESENTATIONS ARE PREPRED BY TEAMS BASED ON THEIR TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON D.C. AND NEW YORK.TOMODACHI MORGAN STANLEY AMBASSADORS PROGRAM - 12 JAPANESE STUDENTS TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON, D.C., FOR TWO WEEKS WORKING WITH 9 AMERICAN STUDENTS FROM THE WASINGTON CENTER. IN TEAMS THEY LEARN ABOUT CROSS-SECTOR PARTNERSHIPS TO UNDERSTAND THE ROLE OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN THE U.S. AND JAPAN AND CREATE PLANS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR COMMUNITIES.TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI INOUYE SCHOLARS PROGRAM - THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES 100 JAPANESE STUDENTS AND 100 AMERICAN STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO AMERICA AND JAPAN FOR A 10-DAY YOUTH EXCHANGE PROGRAM. JAPANESE AND AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES ARE PAIRED FOR THE EXCHANGE. TOMODACHI EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM (ELP) - ELP IDENTIFIES, CULTIVATES AND EMPOWERS A NEW GENERATION OF JAPANESE AMERICAN LEADERS. 12 LEADERS AGED 24-35 ARE SELECTED ANNUALLY TO ATTEND THE USJC ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND PARTICIPATE IN LEADERSIP EDUCATION TRAINING AND DEVELOP LIFELONG PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL FRIENDSHIPS.
GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS: THE GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM INCLUDES THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE, WATANABE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS, ASIAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP DELEGATION (AALD), JAPANESE AMERICAN LEADERSHIP DELEGATION (JALD), WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP, REGIONAL PROGRAMS IN THE U.S. AND JAPAN, NETWORKING AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES, GOVERNMENT AND LEGISLATIVE NETWORKING, JAPAN FLOOD FRIENDSHIP FUND AND COMMUNICATIONS. THE 2019 ANNUAL CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA ON NOVEMBER 4-5, 2019. THE THEME, "BOLD IDEAS, BOLDER LEADERSHIP: THE NEXT STAGE OF U.S.-JAPAN RELATIONS", EXPLORED LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION WITHIN GOVERNMENT AND CORPORATE SPHERES. IN CELEBRATION OF THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE U.S.-JAPAN COUNCIL, PRESIDENT IRENE HIRANO INOUYE INVITED THE AUDIENCE TO LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT DECADE AS USJC PURSUES INITIATIVES TO CONTINUE BRINGING JAPAN AND UNITED STATES CLOSER TOGETHER. WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP: USJC ORGANIZED SEVERAL PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN'S GOAL OF ADVANCING WOMEN IN JAPAN. IN AUGUST, OVER 200 LEADERS CONVENED AT THE CALIFORNIA-JAPAN GOVENOR'S SUMPOSIUM, WHICH USJC CO-HOSTED WITH SILICON VALLEY JAPAN PLATFORM (SVJP). THIS SYMPOSIUM, HELD AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY, BROUGHT TOGETHER GOVERNORS FROM FIVE PREFECTURES TO DISCUSS WAYS TO STRENGTHEN ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN SILICON VALLEY AND JAPAN. IT WAS PART OF USJC AND SVJP'S GOVERNOR'S CIRCLE INITIATIVE, AND FOLLOWED THE SUCCESS OF THE GOVERNORS' MEETING SILICON VALLEY IN JULY 2014. GOVERNMENT AND LEGISLATIVE NETWORKING: AN ANNUAL CONSULS GENERAL- JAPANESE AMERICAN LEADERS MEETING IS SPONSORED BY THE JAPANESE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND ORGANIZED BY THE USJC AND THE EMBASSY OF JAPAN. SVJP AIMS TO CONNECT THE TECHNOLOGICAL DYNAMISM OF SILICON VALLEY WITH THE CURRENT AND FUTURE NEEDS OF ECONMIC REVITALIZATION IN JAPAN. IN 2019, SVJP HELD MONTHLY PROGRAMS FEATURING SPEAKERS ON CUTTING-EDGE TOPICS AND ORGANIZES WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS WITH CORPORATE LEADERS.
