Organizations Filed Purposes: We keep those who are incarcerated connected to their families and community. From the moment of arrest through release. We work hand-and-hand to plan a productive reentry into the community.

Voices for a Second Chance (VSC) (formally the Visitors' Services Center), is an essential safety net for offenders and their families who are likely to be among the most marginalized members of our society. We continue to be the only organization in the Nation's Capital that provides vital services to our neediest citizens. Our goal is to reduce the recidivism rate in the District of Columbia. We know from direct experience that returning citizens who are given services, (both pre and post release from incarceration), make a successful transition and become positive contributing citizens to our economy and community. We remain committed to our long history of providing basic human services to meet basic human needs.

Intake Services and Re-Entry Program- Staff works to collect and store a prisoners' belongings, including his or her identification, telephone, and car keys--which might otherwise be discarded. We will notify family, employer, and others of the inmate's incarceration and help make important arrangements, for example child care. The inmate will be assigned a case worker who will then continue to support him or her throughout the sentence. The Re-Entry program utilizes counselors and staff to help the returning citizen make a successful transition from incarceration to the community. Too often, the returning citizen has no one to meet him or her upon release, and Voices will be there to welcome them. Together with a wide array of community partners, Voices helps clients with practical matters, such as obtaining social security cards and ID's, transportation passes, and clothing. But that is only the beginning: Voices offers group and individual counseling, referrals to housing, domestic violence shelter, GED programs, employment programs, health care including HIV screening and treatment, help for LGBTQ clients, and much much more.
