THE 2018-2019 SEASON WAS ARENA STAGE'S 69TH YEAR IN OPERATION, AND NINTH YEAR IN THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED MEAD CENTER FOR AMERICAN THEATER. ARENA STAGE IS ALIVE AS A CENTER FOR AMERICAN THEATER IN OUR NATION'S CAPITAL WITH PRODUCTIONS, DIVERSE AND INNOVATIVE WORKS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THE NURTURING OF NEW PLAYS. IN THIS SEASON, ARENA PRODUCED NINE SHOWS AND HOSTED DOZENS OF PUBLIC PLAY READINGS, PERFORMANCES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS.THE SEASON OPENED WITH DAVE, A WORLD-PREMIERE MUSICAL BASED ON THE OSCAR-NOMINATED FILM WITH MUSIC BY TOM KITT, LYRICS BY NELL BENJAMIN AND A BOOK BY MS. BENJAMIN AND THOMAS MEEHAN. THE PRODUCTION WAS PRESENTED IN THE KREEGER THEATER AND DIRECTED BY TINA LANDAU. THE NEXT SHOW IN THE KREEGER WAS TURN ME LOOSE, A PLAY ABOUT DICK GREGORY AND HIS RISE AS THE FIRST BLACK COMEDIAN TO EXPOSE AUDIENCES TO RACIAL COMEDY. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE COLE PORTER CLASSIC ANYTHING GOES ON THE FICHANDLER STAGE, DIRECTED BY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MOLLY SMITH. THE PRODUCTION FEATURED FILM AND TELEVISION STAR CORBIN BLEU AS "BILLY CROCKER AND CHOREOGRAPHY BY PARKER ESSE. RUNNING ALONGSIDE ANYTHING GOES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON WAS PAULA VOGEL'S INDECENT. DIRECTED BY ERIC ROSEN, INDECENT WAS A CO-PRODUCTION WITH KANSAS CITY REPERTORY AND BALTIMORE CENTER STAGE AND WAS PRESENTED IN THE KREEGER THEATER. ARENA STAGE BEGAN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE WORLD-PREMIERE DRAMA KLEPTOCRACY, WRITTEN BY KENNETH LIN AND DIRECTED BY JACKSON GAY. THE PLAY, A FICTIONAL ACCOUNT BASED ON HISTORIC EVENTS, FOLLOWS THE COLLAPSE OF THE SOVIET UNION AND THE EVENTS THAT FOLLOWED. THIS WAS FOLLOWED ON THE FICHANDLER STAGE WITH THE HEIRESS, THE CLASSIC PLAY BY RUTH AND AUGUSTUS GOETZ. THE PRODUCTION WAS DIRECTED BY DEPUTY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR SEEMA SUEKO. NEXT IN THE SEASON WAS A WORLD-PREMIERE PREMIERE POWER PLAY, JQA, IN THE KOGOD CRADLE, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY AARON POSNER. THE PLAY IMAGINES KEY CONFRONTATIONS BETWEEN JOHN QUINCY ADAMS AND DYNAMIC AMERICAN FIGURES. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY JUNK, AYAD AKHTAR'S DRAMA INSPIRED BY THE VOLATILE AND CUT-THROAT FINANCIAL WORLD AND THE JUNK BOND GIANTS OF THE 1980S. THE PRODUCTION PLAYED ON THE FICHANDLER STAGE AND WAS DIRECTED BY JACKIE MAXWELL. THE SEASON CONCLUDED IN THE KREEGER THEATER WITH JUBILEE, A WORLD-PREMIERE A CAPPELLA PERFORMANCE WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY TAZEWELL THOMPSON ABOUT THE WORLD-RENOWNED FISK JUBILEE SINGERS. ONE OF OUR STAPLE EDUCATION PROGRAMS IS VOICES OF NOW. IN ITS 18TH YEAR THE PROGRAM CONTINUES TO BE A FORCE FOR EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY, WORKING WITH 10 DIFFERENT YOUTH ENSEMBLES OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON TO WRITE ORIGINAL PIECES BASED ON THEIR LIVES, SHOWCASED IN A FOUR-DAY FESTIVAL IN MAY IN THE KOGOD CRADLE. THESE PLAYS EXAMINED TOPICS SUCH AS EDUCATION EQUALITY, MENTAL HEALTH, AND SCHOOL CULTURE. A SPECIAL RETURNING ENSEMBLE IS FROM THE WENDT CENTER FOR LOSS AND HEALING, WHICH PROVIDES GUIDANCE AND SERVICES FOR CHILDREN DEALING WITH BEREAVEMENT.
