Organizations Filed Purposes:
AFTER-SCHOOL ACADEMY PROGRAM: THE ACADEMY OFFERS AN AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES THREE THROUGH EIGHT WHO RESIDE IN THE DISTRICT'S WARDS 7 AND 8. THE PROGRAM OPERATES ABOUT FOUR HOURS PER DAY FOR THREE DAYS PER WEEK DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES SCHOLAR-ATHLETES WITH A HEALTHY SNACK; STUDY HALL TUTORING SESSIONS; LITERACY, MATH, AND SCIENCE MENTORING; NUTRITION AND COOKING EDUCATION; AND BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL INSTRUCTION. VOLUNTEER MENTORS ASSIST IN IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM, USING THE POWER OF STRONG INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS TO ENHANCE THE IMPACT OF THE CURRICULUM.
SUMMER ACADEMY PROGRAM: DURING THE SUMMER, THE ACADEMY CONDUCTS A PROGRAM FOR THE SAME STUDENTS FROM WARDS 7 AND 8. THIS PROGRAM RUNS FOR SIX WEEKS AND OPERATES FOR THE FULL DAY, MONDAY-FRIDAY. THOUGH THE SUMMER ACADEMY FOCUSES MORE HEAVILY ON BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL DEVELOPMENT AND OPPORTUNITIES, IT ALSO HELPS STUDENTS IMPROVE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND AVOID SUMMER LEARNING LOSS THROUGH CONTINUED EXPOSURE TO THE ACADEMY'S CURRICULUM.
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL LEAGUES: BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL ARE CENTRAL TO THE ACADEMY'S MISSION OF HELPING UNDERSERVED YOUTH IN WASHINGTON GROW INTO DETERMINED STUDENTS, SUPPORTIVE TEAMMATES AND LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. THE ACADEMY STRIVES TO CREATE A SUPPORTIVE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL CULTURE THAT IS CENTERED ON ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM AND THAT REWARDS EFFORT AND TEAMWORK. ACADEMY BASEBALL/SOFTBALL TRAINING IS OFFERED YEAR-ROUND TO SCHOLAR-ATHLETES. DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR, SCHOLAR-ATHLETES PARTICIPATE IN A MIXTURE OF PRACTICES, GAMES AND INNOVATIVE DRILLS DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR PLAYERS THAT ARE NEW TO THE GAME. IN THE SUMMER LEAGUE, WHICH RUNS FROM LATE JUNE TO EARLY AUGUST, TEAM MEMBERS PLAY IN ONE PRACTICE AND ONE GAME PER WEEK, LED BY VOLUNTEER COACHES AND MENTORS.
