Organizations Filed Purposes: WTEF'S MISSION IS TO BUILD LIFE CHAMPIONS BY PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY ACADEMIC, TENNIS AND WELLNESS INSTRUCTION TO LOW-INCOME STUDENTS IN DC AT-RISK OF ACADEMIC FAILURE.WE PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A SAFE HAVEN, ENGAGING THEM IN PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES THAT HELP IMPROVE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE, INSTILL SELF-DISCIPLINE, BUILD CONFIDENCE AND ENCOURAGE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.WE EMPOWER STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL BY HELPING THEM DEVELOP MEANINGFUL VALUES AND CRITICAL LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL LEAD THEM TO MAKE CONSTRUCTIVE LIFE CHOICES.

WTEF PROVIDES SKILLS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE ACADEMIC, ATHLETIC, AND PERSONAL SUCCESS.

CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE: CFE IS A COMPREHENSIVE YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM THAT SERVES STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-12. FROM SEPTEMBER TO JUNE (THE ACADEMIC YEAR) CFE OPERATES FIVE DAYS A WEEK FROM 4 TO 7 P.M.; DURING SUMMER IT RUNS FIVE DAYS A WEEK FROM 8 A.M. TO 5 P.M. FOR NINE WEEKS. PROGRAMMING IS DIVIDED BETWEEN ACADEMICS AND TENNIS; ACADEMICS EMPHASIZES REMEDIAL MATH AND READING INSTRUCTION INDIVIDUALIZED TO ADDRESS EACH CHILD'S SKILL GAPS AS WELL AS HOMEWORK HELP AND TUTORING. ACADEMICS ADHERE TO THE DC COMMON CORE STANDARDS TO ENSURE THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS WHAT CHILDREN LEARN DURING THE DAY. CFE ALSO INCLUDES COUNSELING, MENTORING, COLLEGE EXPLORATION, AND LIFE SKILLS TRAINING AS WELL AS A SUMMER PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES PARTICIPATION IN A NATIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT AND COLLEGE VISITS IN TOURNAMENT HOST CITIES. CFE OPERATES AT THE EAST CAPITOL CAMPUS AND SERVES 160 STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR AND 180 STUDENTS IN THE SUMMER.

ARTHUR ASHE CHILDREN'S PROGRAM: AACP IS AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM THAT SERVES STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-5. IT RUNS FOUR DAYS A WEEK AT TYPICALLY 12-15 DCPS AND 5 DC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOLS IN WARDS 4-8. CHILDREN SPEND TWO AFTERNOONS PLAYING TENNIS ON A COURT OR IN A GYMNASIUM AND TWO AFTERNOONS IN THE CLASSROOM. THE TEACHERS ARE PROVIDED WITH GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TO DELIVER AN EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT THAT IS IN CONCERT WITH THE STUDENT GRADE APPROPRIATE CURRICULA. STUDENTS RECEIVE AT LEAST 45 MINUTES OF HOMEWORK HELP DAILY. THE CURRICULUM EMPHASIZES INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM PROBLEM-SOLVING ACTIVITIES AND COMPETITIONS AND INCORPORATES LIFE SKILLS AWARENESS THROUGH STUDENT-PRODUCED ACTIVITIES THAT ADDRESS TOPICS SUCH AS STOPPING BULLYING, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLES. AACP HAS OPERATED IN DC PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR 20 YEARS AND SERVICES ABOUT 325 CHILDREN EACH YEAR AND SOME FEED INTO THE CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE (CFE) AND SUMMER CAMPS.

SUMMER PROGRAM: THE CFE SUMMER PROGRAM OFFERS LOW-INCOME CHILDREN AND YOUTH LIVING IN HIGH CRIME WASHINGTON, DC NEIGHBORHOODS, NINE WEEKS OF NO-COST STRUCTURED ACTIVITIES FIVE DAYS A WEEK (MON-FRI) FROM 8 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M., DURING THE SUMMER SCHOOL BREAK. CFE SUMMER PROVIDES TENNIS CLINICS AND COMPETITIONS, MATH AND READING ENRICHMENT, ROBOTICS, CHESS AND BOARD GAME CLUBS, COLLEGE CAMPUS TOURS, COMMUNITY-BASED PARTNER PRESENTATIONS, FREE BREAKFAST, HEALTHY SNACKS, AND AN ABUNDANCE OF WATER. CFE SUMMER IS THE LONGEST RUNNING SUMMER PROGRAM IN WASHINGTON, DC.
