Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO EMPOWER COMMUNITY-BASED LEADERS TO PROMOTE SOLUTIONS THAT REDUCE CRIME AND VIOLENCE, RESTORE FAMILIES, REVITALIZE UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES AND ASSIST IN THE CREATION OF ECONOMIC ENTERPRISE.
THE VIOLENCE-FREE ZONE (VFZ) PROGRAM IS A COMMUNITY-BASED INTERVENTION AND PREVENTION INITIATIVE CREATED BY THE WOODSON CENTER (THE CENTER) TO REDUCE YOUTH CRIME, VIOLENCE, AND GANG ACTIVITY IN SPECIFIC GEOGRAPHIC AREAS. THE MISSION OF THE VFZ IS TO IDENTIFY ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE CENTERS OF POSITIVE INFLUENCE FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES AND STRENGTHEN THEIR OPERATIONS THROUGH TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND LINKAGES OF SUPPORT SO THAT THEY CAN WORK TO END VIOLENCE AND REVITALIZE COMMUNITIES. THE CENTER HAS TAKEN THIS MODEL AND PARTNERING WITH STRONG YOUTH-SERVING ORGANIZATIONS, IMPLEMENTED PROGRAMS AROUND THE COUNTRY. THE VFZ CURRENTLY FOCUSES ON THE MOST TROUBLED PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND NEIGHBORHOODS IN MILWAUKEE, RACINE, BALTIMORE, HARTFORD, CHICAGO, AND WASHINGTON, DC IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE SOARING INCIDENCE OF YOUTH VIOLENCE.
