THE ANIMAL COLLECTION & WORK WITH ENDANGERED SPECIES:ANIMAL HIGHLIGHTS IN 2019 INCLUDED THE OPENING OF THE NEW AFRICAN SAVANNA TRANSFORMATION, WITH NEW AND EXPANDED HABITATS FOR AFRICAN ELEPHANTS, GIRAFFES, ZEBRAS, WARTHOGS, MEERKATS AND OSTRICHES. NEW ANIMALS INCLUDED A MALE AFRICAN ELEPHANT, A NEW SOCIAL COMPANION FOR THE ELEPHANTS AT ZOO ATLANTA; FOUR MALE SLENDER-TAILED MEERKATS; A FEMALE HOFFMANN'S TWO-TOED SLOTH; THREE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED BLUE-THROATED MACAWS; A PAIR OF RHINOCEROS HORNBILLS; AND TWO PATAGONIAN MARAS. BIRTHS INCLUDED AN ANGOLAN COLOBUS MONKEY; CHILEAN FLAMINGOS; AN ENDANGERED CROWNED LEMUR; A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA; AND MORE. IN 2019, ZOO TEAM MEMBERS PUBLISHED 12 PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCH PAPERS ON ANIMAL BIOLOGY, BEHAVIOR, COGNITION, VETERINARY CARE AND CONSERVATION.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DIVERSITY EFFORTS:THE ZOO INCORPORATES ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS INTO ITS BUSINESS BY REDUCING IMPACT THROUGH POLLUTION PREVENTION, WASTE REDUCTION AND CONSERVATION OF RESOURCES. THE GREEN TEAM MONITORS THE ZOO'S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS AND MAINTAINS A SUSTAINABLE WORKPLACE. AN ORGANIZATION-WIDE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY PLAN WITH SPECIFIC SUSTAINABILITY GOALS WAS DEVELOPED IN 2019. ZOO ATLANTA RECEIVED AN OFFICE FURNITURE DONATION DURING THE YEAR THAT FULLY FURNISHED A NEWLY RENOVATED BUILDING WHICH INCLUDED ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES. THE ZOO'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND TEAM MEMBERS ARE COMPOSED OF TALENTED INDIVIDUALS FROM VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL, RELIGIOUS, ETHNIC, SOCIO-ECONOMIC, CIVIC AND POLITICAL BACKGROUNDS REFLECTIVE OF THE DIVERSE COMMUNITY. THROUGH THE SUPPLIER DIVERSITY PROGRAM, THE ZOO CONDUCTED BUSINESS WITH 120 MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN 2019.

EDUCATION & CONSERVATION:IN 2019, THE ZOO'S PUBLIC, SCHOOL AND FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVED 130,000 INDIVIDUALS. EDUCATION PROGRAMS CREATE FUN AND ENGAGING EXPERIENCES TO CONNECT ZOO VISITORS WITH WILDLIFE, PROVIDE AND SUPPORT SCIENCE CURRICULA TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' UNDERSTANDING OF THE NATURAL WORLD AND EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS TO TAKE ACTION. ZOO ATLANTA IS DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN FIELD CONSERVATION PROGRAMS FOR WILDLIFE AND WILD PLACES AROUND THE GLOBE. THE ZOO'S NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH CONSERVATION SOUTH LUANGWA ALIGNS WITH THE ZOO'S CONSERVATION STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN AND PROTECTS AFRICAN ELEPHANTS IMPACTED BY WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING. THE MABEL DORN REEDER CONSERVATION ENDOWMENT FUND AWARDED SIX GRANTS TOTALING $45,166 IN 2019.
