Production of Live Theater Performances and Education
We do not separate the art and the education: our Student Matine performances are the same shows as our evening audiences enjoy. We produced 7 plays by Shakespeare (As You Like It, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julius Caesar, King Lear, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, and Much Ado About Nothing) and 4 plays by other authors, including Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, William Luce's Bronte, The Three Musketeers, and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Before shutting down March 17 for COVID, we staged 172 performances that reached a total audience of 27,653, of which 9,477 were Middle and High School students. We present full productions of Core curriculum Shakespeare two mornings per week during the school year.
Because our Education Artists also perform on our Main Stage, it is impossible to segregate costs. All Program costs are included on line 4a. Each year, our Apprentice Program trains six to eight artists in Acting, Voice, Stage Combat, Dance and Theater Production, culminating in a public performance showcasing their growth in each of their training areas. Our Education Artists taught 12 Shakespeare Superheroes Summer Camps for all ages, benefiting 252 children. The Shakespeare Intensive for Teens had three tracks for 48 students. Our Education Artists traveled to schools to teach and perform Shakespeare via our original adaptations: Midsummer Jr., MacBeth 60, R&J 60, and Journey's End. These school programs reached 7,347 students and 383 teachers. In addition, we produced three student productions that were performed on our Main Stage.
The Atlanta Shakespeare Company is in performance on our Main Stage four nights per week, 51 weeks per year (until COVID) with two Student Matines each week during the school year. But whenever possible, we are happy to make our facilities available to other companies for their productions, including Havoc: Fight for the Light; Lend Me An Ear, a Radio show benefiting the Atlanta Food Bank; The Atlanta Chamber Players; and the Atlanta Opera Holiday Favorites. These show reached 429 audience members.
