Organizations Filed Purposes: CAMP KUDZU'S MISSION IS TO EDUCATE, EMPOWER AND INSPIRE CHILDREN AND TEENS LIVING WITH DIABETES. THROUGH ITS CAMP AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, CAMP KUDZU CHANGES YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIVES. WITHOUT THE LESSONS LEARNED AND PRACTICED AT CAMP KUDZU, MANY CHILDREN LACK ACCESS TO DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SUPPORT AND WOULD HAVE INCREASED RISK FOR SERIOUS MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS AND/OR SHORTENED LIFE SPANS. CAMP KUDZU IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WHICH BEGAN PROVIDING MEDICAL SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION, RECREATION AND PEER-NETWORKING PROGRAMS IN THE YEAR 2000. IT WAS FORMED IN 1999 IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA BY PARENTS, DOCTORS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS WHO JOINED FORCES TO ESTABLISH PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENTAL AND MEDICAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES IN A FUN ENVIRONMENT MARKED BY CLINICAL OVERSIGHT AND DIRECTION.

THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR REPRESENTED CAMP KUDZU'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY BY CUMULATIVELY SERVING MORE THAN 4,000 CAMPERS AND THEIR FAMILIES LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES (T1D) IN GEORGIA. BY PROVIDING YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS FOR CHILREN, TEENS AND FAMILIES, THIS PAST YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO IMPACT THE LIVES OF 935 CAMPERS. AS PART OF A SPECIAL OUTCOMES RESARCH PROJECT, DATA WAS PROVEN TO BE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT AND REVEALED THAT CAMPERS WHO ATTEND KUDZU REPORT AN INCREASE IN SENSE OF BELONGING, OWNERSHIP OF THEIR DISEASE, AND AUTONOMY. THEY FEEL AT HOME AND CONFIDENT IN MANAGING THEIR DIABETES!THE SUMMER OF 2019, CAMP KUDZU HOSTED FOUR OVERNIGHT SESSIONS AND SERVED NEARLY 700 CHILDREN AND YOUTH WITH T1D. PARTICIPANTS RANGING FROM AGE 8 THROUGH 18 PARTICIPATED IN A MIX OF PHYSICALLY EXERTIVE ACTIVITIES AND QUIETER PURSUITS. THEY WORKED CLOSELY WITH CLINICAL STAFF REGARDING DIABETES MANAGEMENT AT LEAST 4 TIMES DAILY. THEY SPENT TIME WITH OTHERS WHO ARE JUST LIKE THEM IN LEARNING ABOUT AND COPING WITH DIABETES AND WERE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF MENTORS. MORE THAN 50% OF SUMMER CAMPERS RECEIVED FULL OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS. 190 CAMPERS SHOWED COMPREHENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF INDEPENDENT DIABETES MANAGEMENT, INDICATING PREPAREDNESS FOR THE TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD AS IT RELATES TO THEIR DISEASE MANAGEMENT.

CAMP KUDZU HOSTED TWO FAMILY WEEKEND CAMPS, ONE EACH IN THE FALL AND SPRING AND SERVED 70 FAMILILES THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. THESE WEEKEND PROGRAMS PROVIDED EDUCATION, SUPPORT AND COMMUNITY FOR FAMILIES WITH NEWLY DIAGNOSED CHILDREN OR CHILDREN TOO YOUNG TO ATTEND SUMMER CAMP, AS WELL AS FAMILIES WHO NEED ONGOING SUPPORT SINCE THEIR CHILDREN'S DIABETES HAS NO CURE OR END DATE. AT FAMILY WEEKEND CAMPS, THE CHILDREN ENJOYED THE FUN OF CAMP WHILE THE WHOLE FAMILY RECEIVED VITAL DIABETES MANAGEMENT EDUCATION AND COPING SKILLS FOR FAMILY AND SCHOOL LIFE. MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS WERE ON SITE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND TO DELIVER DIABETESMANAGEMENT INFORMATION AND TO ANSWER SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ABOUT DIET, ACTIVITY, AND EMERGING TRENDS IN GLYCEMIC CONTROL. FAMILIES HAD THE CHANCE TO CONNECT AND DEVELOP FRIENDSHIPS THAT CAN SUSTAIN THEM LONG AFTER THE WEEKEND ENDS.

OUR TEEN WEEKEND PROGRAMING INCLUDES OUR "TEEN RETREAT" WEEKEND AND IS OFFERED TO PARTICPANTS IN 7TH TO 11TH GRADE AND HAS GROWN IN PARTCIPATION IN RECENT YEARS. FOR THE WINTER 2019 PROGRAM, WE HOSTED NEARLY 100 CAMPERS. THIS WEEKEND OVERNIGHT PROGRAM PROVIDES THE CO-ED EXPERIENCE OF CAMP WITH FUN AND EDUCATION FOCUSED ON SKILLS REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION TO YOUNG ADULTS. PROFESSIONALS ARE ON SITE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND TO DELIVER DIABETES MANAGEMENT INFORMATION AND TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT DIET, ACTIVITY AND EMERGING TRENDS IN GLYCEMIC CONTROL. TEENS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT AND DEVELOP FRIENDSHIPS THAT CAN SUSTAIN THEM YEAR-ROUND.
