Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Council on Criminal Justice advances understanding of the criminal justice policy choices facing the nation and builds consensus for solutions that enhance safety and justice for all. We believe a fair and effective criminal justice system is essential to democracy and a core measure of our nation's well-being. Primary activities include research, membership convenings, and policy development task forces.
In October 2019, the Council on Criminal Justice convened 200 top leaders, thinkers and doers from across the criminal justice and policy field for the Inaugural Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. This one-day event explored the key forces and trends that are shaping the criminal justice reform landscape today and provided attendees the opportunity to shape the nation's safety and justice agenda.
Beginning in July 2019, the Council's first member task force met to articulate a consensus view of the next steps that the federal government could take in the short- to medium-term to produce the greatest improvements in public safety and the administration of justice.
IN 2019, THE COUNCIL PREPARED AND RELEASED ANALYSES ON: (1) THE IMPACT AND LEGACY OF THE 1994 CRIME BILL; AND, (2) TRENDS IN INCARCERATION BY RACE AND GENDER.
