FOOD WELL ALLIANCE, INC.'S MISSION IS TO GROW A RESILIENT, LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT IN METRO ATLANTA BY CONNECTING INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS AND PROMOTING COLLECTIVE ACTION TO BUILD HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES.
FOOD WELL ALLIANCE'S LOCAL FOOD PROGRAMS ADDRESS THREE KEY AREAS OF CHALLENGE - LACK OF COORDINATED RESOURCES FOR GARDENS AND FARMS, LACK OF GROWERS' PARTICIPATION IN POLICY DECISION-MAKING, AND LACK OF RESIDENTS' CONNECTION TO GARDENS AND FARMS. OUR SOLUTION IS TO EQUIP LOCAL GROWERS, GOVERNMENTS, AND RESIDENTS WITH ADDITIONAL TOOLS THEY NEED TO PRESERVE AND PROTECT GROWING SPACES. WE ARE ADDRESSING CHALLENGES THROUGH THREE PROGRAMS:1) RESOURCE CENTER - WE PROVIDE CENTRALIZED TRAINING, RESOURCES, AND FUNDING TO BUILD A SUPPORTIVE ECOSYSTEM FOR THRIVING COMMUNITY GARDENS AND URBAN FARMS. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS WORK THROUGH 5 AREAS OF SUPPORT: KNOWLEDGE (E.G. TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS WITH PARTNERS INCLUDING ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN AND CENTER FOR CIVIC INNOVATION), VOLUNTEERS (THROUGH THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK AND COMMUNITY BUCKET), COMPOST (THROUGH PARTNERS INCLUDING COMPOSTNOW), TOOLS & EQUIPMENT (THROUGH PARTNERS INCLUDING ATLANTA COMMUNITY TOOLBANK), AND GRANTS (FOR URBAN FARMS, COMMUNITY GARDENS, AND COMMUNITY FOOD ORGANIZATIONS).2) POLICY & ADVOCACY - WE EMPOWER LOCAL GROWERS AND GOVERNMENT LEADERS TO COME TOGETHER TO DEVELOP INCLUSIVE POLICIES AND CITY PLANS THAT PRIORITIZE AND IGNITE A REGIONAL COALITION FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS WORK THROUGH 3 AREAS OF ACTION: CITY AGRICULTURE PLANNING (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ATLANTA REGIONAL COMMISSION AND OUR PILOT CITY - THE CITY OF EAST POINT), ATLANTA COMMUNITY COMPOST COUNCIL (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EPA AND GEORGIA RECYCLING COALITION), AND LAND STRATEGY (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF ATLANTA'S AGLANTA GROWS-A-LOT PROGRAM AND PARK PRIDE)3) EVENTS & EXPERIENCES - WE DESIGN AND EXECUTE UNFORGETTABLE EVENTS, STORIES, AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES THAT CONNECT PEOPLE TO WHERE THEIR FOOD COMES FROM. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS WORK THROUGH THESE KEY AREAS OF ENGAGEMENT: DIGITAL STORYTELLING AND MEDIA (FEATURING GROWERS AND PARTNERS IN METRO ATLANTA'S LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT), AND AWARENESS RAISING EVENTS (LIKE SOIL FESTIVAL IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TRULY LIVING WELL CENTER FOR NATURAL URBAN AGRICULTURE).COVID-19 HAS RAISED THE BAR FOR FWA AND THE LOCAL FOOD CHAMPIONS WE SUPPORT. IF WE WERE DRIVEN TO INCREASE ACCESS TO FRESH, LOCALLY-GROWN FOOD BEFORE THE PANDEMIC, WE ARE NOW MORE MOTIVATED THAN EVER. AFTER SURVEYING OUR GROWERS' NEEDS, WE SWIFTLY MOVED INTO ACTION TO PROVIDE RESOURCES IN FOUR KEY AREAS: URBAN FARMS, COMMUNITY GARDENS, HOME GARDENS, AND SCHOOL GARDENS:URBAN FARMS - DEPLOYED MORE THAN 1,160 HOURS OF LABOR AND MECHANICAL SUPPORT, AND DELIVERED 340 CUBIC YARDS OF COMPOST TO URBAN FARMS.COMMUNITY GARDENS - DELIVERED 1,710 VEGETABLE PLANTS TO 31 COMMUNITY GARDENS AND COMPOST TO 29; PROVIDED LABOR SUPPORT AT 31 GARDENS IN LIEU OF CANCELLED VOLUNTEER GROUPS (DUE TO SOCIAL DISTANCING). DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 315,000 POUNDS OF FRESH PRODUCE THROUGH A PLANT-A-ROW INITIATIVE.HOME GARDENS - DISTRIBUTED 300 BUCKET GARDENS TO 100 FAMILIES, 100 GROW BOXES TO 100 FAMILIES, AND 80 PLANT STARTS AND GARDEN KITS TO 28 SNAP FAMILIES, EMPOWERING THEM TO GROW EASY HOME GARDENS.SCHOOL GARDENS - REVIVED MORE THAN 100 SCHOOL GARDENS BY PROVIDING SEEDLINGS, IRRIGATION, COMPOST, AND EXPERT FARMERS TO GROW FRESH VEGETABLES WHICH WILL FEED SCHOOL FAMILIES.OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO COVID-19 HAS EQUIPPED US WITH NEW KNOWLEDGE AND KEY LEARNINGS THAT WILL INFORM OUR WORK MOVING FORWARD.
