GEORGIA LIFE SCIENCES SUMMIT - THE GEORGIA LIFE SCIENCES SUMMIT HAS BECOME THE PREMIER LIFE SCIENCES CONFERENCE IN THE SOUTHEAST. THE SUMMIT WILL SHOWCASE THE MOST ADVANCED LIFE SCIENCE RESEARCH AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTS NOT ONLY IN BIOMEDICINE AND MEDICAL DEVIES, BUT ALSO I AGRICULTURE AND BIOENERGY. CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE HAS TOPPED 750 AND ATTENDEES INCLUDED COMPANY EXECUTIVES, UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS AND SCIENTISTS, GOVERNMENT LEADERS, INVESTORS AND PUBLIC POLICY EXPERTS. THE EXHIBIT HALL WAS A SELL-OUT AND MORE THAN 100 SCIENTISTS FROM INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIA COMPETED IN THE POSTER CONTEST AS PART OF AN EXPANDED SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM.LIFE SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS FROM ACROSS THE NATION, EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, AND ASIA ATTEND THIS EVENT. THE EVENT FEATURES 2 KEYNOTE ADDRESSES, OVER 10 BREAKOUT SESSIONS WITH BUSINESS EXPERTS, SCIENTISTS AND PUBLIC POLICY OFFICIALS SHARING INSIGHTS ON TOPICS RANGING FROM GLOBAL HEALTHCARE TO BIOENERGY AND A CLOSING GALA.
EDUCATION - GEORGIA BIO LAUNCHED A STRATEGIC INITIATIVE IN EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN JANUARY 2007 IN AN EFFORT TO ACCELERATE THE ALIGNMENT OF GEORGIA'S CURRENT AND FUTURE WORKFORCE WITH THE NEEDS OF ITS LIFE SCIENCES INDUSTRY. A SECONDARY GOAL WAS HIGHLIGHTING GEORGIA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE BIO 2009 CONVENTION. GEORGIA BIO HAS FOCUSED ON A MODEL OF LIFE SCIENCE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, PILOTED IN THE INNOVATION CRESCENT, A THIRTEEN COUNTY REGION SPANNING ATLANTA TO ATHENS THAT ENCOMPASSES ABOUT 85% OF GEORGIA'S LIFE SCIENCE INDUSTRY. THE INNOVATION CRESCENT MODEL CONNECTS EDUCATION AND CAREER PATHWAY DEVELOPMENT WITH GEORGIA'S WORK READY PROGRAM, AND PLACES IT IN AN INDUSTRY-FOCUSED CONTEXT LED BY AN INDUSTRY NETWORK. EDUCATION ACTIVITIES INCLUDE: EXPOSING MORE STUDENTS TO BIOSCIENCE AND BIOSCIENCE CAREERS, IMPLEMENTING NEW BIOTECHNOLOGY CURRICULA IN GEORGIA'S HIGH SCHOOLS, SUPPORTING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS, CONNECTING BUSINESS AND SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS WITH THE CLASSROOM, DEVELOPING COMMON SOLUTIONS FOR EXISTING WORKER TRAINING NEEDS, AND CONVENING A COMMON DIALOG TO KEEP OUR WORKFORCE STRATEGIES AHEAD OF THE CURVE.
MEETINGS & PROGRAMS - BREAKFAST MEETINGS WITH SPEAKERS, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, SEMINARS FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS, EVENING NETWORKING EVENTS, ARE ALL OFFERED TO GEORGIA BIO MEMBERS ON A MONTHLY BASIS. 60-100 MEMBERS ATTEND MULTIPLE EVENTS EACH MONTH WITH TOPICS SELECTED BY ACTIVE GABIO COMMITTEES (SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, MEDICAL DEVICE, EMERGING COMPANY COMMITTEE) OR THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE INVITES A GUEST SPEAKER ON A TOPIC OF PARTICULAR GENERAL INTEREST. A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE WOULD BE THE LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE TRADITIONALLY "HOSTS" THE DECEMBER BREAKFAST MEETING AND THE LEGISLATIVE AGENDA FOR THE NEXT YEAR AS IT RELATES TO THE LIFE SCIENCES INDUSTRY IS THE TOPIC OF THE PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION.
