Organizations Filed Purposes: MIDTOWN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL SERVES GIFTED AND ACADEMICALLY SUPERIOR STUDENTS WHO THRIVE IN SMALL CLASS ENVIRONMENTS. THE GLOBALLY-MINDED CURRICULUM AND PROBLEM-BASED INSTRUCTION CREATE A COMMUNITY OF ENGAGED GLOBAL LEADERS DEDICATED TO THE VALUES OF RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, CITIZENSHIP, AND JUSTICE. THE SCHOOL IMMERSES STUDENTS IN A DIVERSITY OF VIEWPOINTS THAT TRANSCEND NATIONAL, ETHNIC, AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC BOUNDARIES. PROBLEM SOLVING AND CRITICAL THINKING ARE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR INTEGRATED CURRICULUM, DEVELOPING INQUISITIVE, FLEXIBLE, AND COLLABORATIVE THINKERS WHO WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN A KNOWLEDGE-DRIVEN GLOBAL SOCIETY. MIS IGNITES THE EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL LEARNING OF GIFTED STUDENTS THROUGH ADVANCED INSTRUCTION IN SCIENCE, MATH, AND TECHNOLOGY; ARTS INTEGRATION ACROSS THE CURRICULUM; DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND PEER COLLABORATION; STRATEGIC COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS; AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FOR ALL UPPER ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.

MIDTOWN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LOCATED IN ATLANTA, GA IS AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL SERVING GIFTED AND ACADEMICALLY ADVANCED STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12. OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS, MIS HAS EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT GROWTH, GROWING FROM ONLY 45 STUDENTS IN YEAR ONE TO 245 STUDENTS IN YEAR SIX. IN 2014, MIS EXPANDED ITS OFFERING INTO HIGH SCHOOL WITH THE GOAL OF GRADUATING ITS FIRST CLASS IN THE YEAR 2020. THE PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING CURRICULUM ENCOURAGES STUDENTS, ALONGSIDE THEIR TEACHERS AS THEIR CO-LEARNERS, TO DELVE DEEP INTO REAL WORLD PROBLEMS. THROUGH PEER COLLABORATION AND A DEEP CONCENTRATION IN STEAM SUBJECTS, STUDENTS ARE NOT CONFINED BY THE WALLS OF THE SCHOOL. STARTING IN THIRD GRADE, STUDENTS TRAVEL DOMESTICALLY AND IN FIFTH GRADE, THEY EXPAND THEIR TRAVEL TO INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS. WORLD LANGUAGES ARE TAUGHT AS EARLY AS KINDERGARTEN WITH ALL STUDENTS TAKING FRENCH, SPANISH AND MANDARIN. IN FIFTH GRADE, STUDENTS CAN SELECT ONE OF THOSE LANGUAGES OR GERMAN OR HEBREW FOR MASTERY. UNLIKE OTHER SCHOOLS, MIS STUDENTS ARE TAUGHT BY CONTENT AREA SPECIALISTS WHO HAVE BEEN CERTIFIED IN GIFTED EDUCATION. THIS ENABLES STUDENTS TO EXPLORE A CONTENT AREA IN DEPTH WITH GREAT COMPLEXITY, OFTEN BEYOND THE TYPICAL STUDY IN MORE TRADITIONAL SETTINGS. THIS MODEL EMPOWERS BOTH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO THINK CRITICALLY AND CREATIVELY TO SOLVE REAL WORLD PROBLEMS. IN JUST SIX SHORT YEARS, MIS HAS BEEN A PIONEER FOR WHAT GIFTED EDUCATION LOOKS LIKE IN A SCHOOL SETTING AND IS PROUD TO CELEBRATE ITS WINS: -SEVERAL MIS STUDENTS WON AWARDS AT NATIONALS FOR THEIR NATIONAL HISTORY DAY PROJECT. THEY WERE SELECTED OUT OF OVER 750,000 STUDENTS PARTICIPATING AROUND THE WORLD AND WERE ONE OF ONLY TWO GEORGIA TEAMS TO EVER PLACE AT A NATIONAL LEVEL. -STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN GLOBAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT, NAIS PEOPLE OF COLOR CONFERENCE, THE STUDENT DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE AND THE BIONEERS CONFERENCE. -OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS, TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS HAVE PRESENTED ABOUT GIFTED LEARNING 22 TIMES, RANGING FROM TOPICS ON NEURODIVERSITY OF GIFTED LEARNERS, EXPLORING EXECUTIVE FUNCTION AND DIALOGUE ON SOCIAL JUSTICE. -OUR TEACHERS HAVE ATTENDED NO LESS THAN 50 CONFERENCES OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, AT A COST OF OVER 100,000 TO MIS. -MIS ROUTINELY HOSTS VISITORS FROM AROUND ATLANTA, THE COUNTRY AND EVEN THE WORLD TO SEE HOW WE PRACTICE DIFFERENTIATION IN THE CLASSROOM. -STAFF MEMBERS LEAD INTERNAL IDENTITY WORKSPACES AND WE HAVE TWO FACULTY MEMBERS WHO FACILITATE IDENTITY WORKSPACES FOR NAIS, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS. -ESTABLISHED 37 UNIQUE PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDENS, TREES ATLANTA AND ARTS FOR LEARNING AND THE CARLOS MUSEUM JUST TO NAME A FEW.
