EDUCATION AND SUPPORT: IN THE FISCAL YEAR MAY 1, 2019 - APRIL 30, 2020, NAMI GEORGIA SERVED APPROXIMATELY 33,186 INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AS WELL AS FIRST RESPONDERS, EDUCATORS AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS THROUGH A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS (SOME DUPLICATION IS LIKELY DUE TO SOME INDIVIDUALS ATTENDING MORE THAN ONE PROGRAM). THESE INDIVIDUALS WERE SERVED THROUGH AN ARRAY OF PROGRAMS INCLUDING MULTI-DAY CLASSES, PRESENTATIONS, AND SUPPORT GROUPS. NAMI GEORGIA'S PROGRAMS ARE ALWAYS FREE OF CHARGE TO THE PARTICIPANTS. THESE 33,186 PARTICIPANTS WERE REACHED THROUGH 2,353 PROGRAM DELIVERIES IN ALL REGIONS OF THE STATE THROUGH NAMI GEORGIA'S 18 AFFILIATES. THESE NUMBERS ARE BROKEN DOWN FURTHER TO BETTER EXPLAIN THE IMPACT. NAMI GEORGIA PROVIDES TRAIN THE TEACHER EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO GRADUATES OF NAMI GEORGIA PROGRAMS, IN ORDER TO BUILD CAPACITY FOR PROGRAM GROWTH. IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, NAMI GEORGIA CERTIFIED 375 PROGRAM LEADERS IN TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAMS IN THE 10 MONTHS PRIOR TO COVID-19. IN ADDITION, FOLLOWING THE MARCH 13, 2020 STAY AT HOME ORDER BY GOVERNOR KEMP, NAMI GEORGIA FACILITATED GROUP SESSIONS, OFFICE HOURS, AND SUPPORT CALLS TO ENSURE ALL PROGRAM LEADERS HAD THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH VIRTUAL DELIVERY. ADDITIONALLY, NAMI GEORGIA MEMBERS FACILITATED 1,323 NAMI FAMILY (507) AND PEER (816) SUPPORT GROUPS. THESE SUPPORT GROUPS WERE TRADITIONALLY HELD IN-PERSON, HOWEVER THEY WERE MODIFIED FOLLOWING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK TO BE DELIVERED OVER VIRTUAL PLATFORMS TO ENSURE INDIVIDUALS IMPACTED BY MENTAL ILLNESS WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE PEER-LED SUPPORT, IN A SAFE SETTING. NAMI GEORGIA, IN COORDINATION WITH ITS 18 AFFILIATES, ALSO HELD 543 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE 44 NAMI SIGNATURE EDUCATION PROGRAM DELIVERIES, 44 NAMI GEORGIA FIRST RESPONDER EDUCATION PROGRAM DELIVERIES, 410 CLASSES COORDINATED IN SCHOOLS THROUGH SUBCONTRACTORS, 41 LOCAL EDUCATION MEETINGS, AND 4 CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS. THESE EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVED 9,988 PARTICIPANTS. IN ADDITION, NAMI GEORGIA DELIVERED 460 PEER-LED, AWARENESS PRESENTATIONS (NAMI ENDING THE SILENCE AND NAMI IN OUR OWN VOICE). THESE PRESENTATIONS REACHED AN AUDIENCE OF 11,972 PEOPLE. CLASSES OFFERED BY NAMI GEORGIA PROVIDE EDUCATION AND INCREASE AWARENESS OF INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS AND THEIR FAMILIES AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC. INDIVIDUALS WHO BENEFIT FROM NAMI PROGRAMS REPRESENT ALL AGES, CULTURES, RACE, ETHNICITY, SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS. IN ADDITION, NAMI GEORGIA RESPONDED TO 1,705 RESOURCE/HELPLINE CALLS AND EMAILS FROM PEOPLE THROUGHOUT GEORGIA. IN ORDER TO PROMOTE THE RECOVERY MOVEMENT WITHIN NAMI GEORGIA AND ITS AFFILIATES AS WELL AS INTEGRATE NAMI WITH THE RECOVERY COMMUNITY, NAMI GEORGIA LAUNCHED THE RECOVERY COMMITTEE IN OCTOBER 2019. THIS COMMITTEE MET MONTHLY AND CREATED TOOLS TO SUPPORT GRASSROOTS RECOVERY INITIATIVES. THIS COMMITTEE WAS SUPPORTED BY THE WORK OF 114 VOLUNTEER MEMBERS AND LAUNCHED EIGHT ASSESSMENTS AND TOOLKITS TO SUPPORT REGIONAL RECOVERY MOVEMENTS. IN RESPONSE TO REQUESTS FROM COMMUNITIES ACROSS GEORGIA, NAMI GEORGIA ALSO HELD SEVERAL SPECIAL EDITION PROGRAMS WITH THE SUPPORT OF SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS ACROSS THE STATE. ON DECEMBER 7TH 2019, NAMI GEORGIA HOSTED A RECOVERY LANGUAGE WORKSHOP FACILITATOR TRAINING. THIS PEER-LED TRAINING TAUGHT PARTICIPANTS THE SKILLS NEEDED TO LEAD WORKSHOPS ON RECOVERY LANGUAGE, OR HOW TO INFUSE RECOVERY LANGUAGE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT INTO NAMI GEORGIA PROGRAMS. THIS TRAINING WAS ATTENDED BY 23 NAMI AFFILIATE MEMBERS, WHO BROUGHT THE SKILLS AND RESOURCES BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. ON DECEMBER 13TH AND 14TH, 2019, NAMI GEORGIA DELIVERED THE TWO BACK TO BACK IN-PERSON SIGNALS CLASSES TO 55 TOTAL PARTICIPANTS FROM ACROSS THE STATE OF GEORGIA. SIGNALS IS A GROUNDBREAKING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO RAISE AWARENESS AROUND EARLY CHILDHOOD SIGNALS THAT ARE OFTEN MISDIAGNOSED AND/OR OVERLOOKED AS EARLY INDICATORS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL WELLNESS. NAMI GEORGIA, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SUCCESSFULLY EMBARKED ON ITS SECOND PROGRAM YEAR TO PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATORS ACROSS THE STATE THROUGH THE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TRAINING (MHAT) MENU OF COURSE OPTIONS DISTRIBUTED TO THE 16 REGIONAL EDUCATION SUPPORT AGENCIES. THE PURPOSE OF THE MHAT IS TO PROVIDE GEORGIA SCHOOLS AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS WITH INFORMATION ON RESEARCH DRIVEN, EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES AND PRACTICAL GUIDANCE TO HELP SCHOOL LEADERS, TEACHERS, AND STAFF MORE EFFECTIVELY ASSESS AND ADDRESS STUDENT MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS TO IMPROVE EDUCATIONAL AND LIFE OUTCOMES FOR THEIR STUDENTS. THE BEST PRACTICE, EVIDENCE-BASED TRAININGS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE AVAILABLE TO IMPROVE THE AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH IN SCHOOLS ARE OFFERED THROUGH NAMI GEORGIA'S PARTNERSHIPS KEY COMMUNITY-ORIENTED AGENCIES ACROSS THE STATE. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, NAMI GEORGIA DELIVERED 580 PROGRAMS TO 13,676 SCHOOL PERSONNEL. THESE NUMBERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE NUMBERS ABOVE AND DETAILED HERE TO PROVIDE GREATER DETAIL. OF THESE 580 PROGRAMS, 151 WERE ENDING THE SILENCE PRESENTATIONS, 13 WERE CIT YOUTH CLASSES, AND 410 WERE COORDINATED THROUGH A NETWORK OF SUBCONTRACTORS. AS A PART OF THIS CONTRACT, NAMI GEORGIA ALSO OFFERED SIX TRAIN THE TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES TO EDUCATORS TO PROVIDE TRAINING IN THEIR OWN SCHOOLS. THESE TRAININGS CERTIFIED 93 NEW PROGRAM LEADERS. THE EVALUATION DATA FROM EACH OF THE 18 PROGRAMS OFFERED THROUGH THIS MENU FINDS THAT PARTICIPANTS OVERWHELMINGLY REPORT AN INCREASE IN THEIR LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE ADDRESSING MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS IN STUDENTS. THE SUCCESS OF THE MHAT PROJECT IN SCHOOLS HAS DEMONSTRATED THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS. FIRST, WORKFORCES BENEFIT FROM EASILY ACCESSIBLE, CENTRALIZED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. COVID-19 RESPONSE: IN ADDITION TO MODIFYING NAMI GEORGIA PROGRAMS FOR VIRTUAL DELIVERY AND RETRAINING PROGRAM LEADERS HOW TO FACILITATE PROGRAMS OVER ZOOM, NAMI GEORGIA ALSO LAUNCHED A FULL-SCALE SUPPORT RESPONSE FOR COVID-19. ON MARCH 13, 2020 WHEN GOVERNOR KEMP DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR THE OUTBREAK OF THE CORONAVIRUS IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA, NAMI GEORGIA BRIEFLY HAD TO CANCEL ALL IN-PERSON PROGRAMS. THIS LEFT OUR STAFF GRAVELY CONCERNED FOR THE WELLBEING OF INDIVIDUALS WHOSE MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS MIGHT BE EXACERBATED BY THE INTERRUPTION OF SERVICES AND THE HEIGHTENED STRESS DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. NAMI GEORGIA ALSO DEVELOPED NEW AND SUSTAINABLE WAYS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO MENTAL HEALTH CONSUMERS AND THEIR FAMILIES INCLUDING WEEKLY EDUCATIONAL WEBINARS WITH SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WHO PROVIDED RESOURCES FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS, TOOLKITS FOR ADULTS WHO CARE FOR YOUTH TO DE-ESCALATE CRISIS SITUATIONS, AND COMMUNICATION CHANNELS TO DISTRIBUTE INFORMATION FROM RELIABLE SOURCES THROUGH OUR NEWSLETTER. PUBLIC AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY: IN ORDER TO REALIZE ITS VISION TO HAVE A GEORGIA WHERE ALL AFFECTED BY MENTAL ILLNESSES FIND HOPE, HELP, AND ACCEPTANCE, NAMI GEORGIA SETS ANNUAL STRATEGIES TO RAISE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS. THIS YEAR, NAMI GEORGIA SUPPORTED THREE AWARENESS/FUNDRAISING EVENTS, NAMIWALKS, IN ATLANTA, MOULTRIE, AND GAINESVILLE, GA, WITH OVER 2,023 PARTICIPANTS. ALSO, THE ORGANIZATION'S 460 PRESENTATIONS OF NAMI IN OUR OWN VOICE AND NAMI ENDING THE SILENCE, AS WELL AS STAFF AND VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY EVENTS, BROUGHT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS TO PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE STATE. NAMI GEORGIA ALSO ENGAGED A LOBBYIST FOR THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION. THE NAMI GEORGIA STAFF AND AFFILIATE LEADERS HOSTED A NAMI SMARTS CLASS, IN WHICH 53 ADVOCATES WERE TRAINED TO EFFECTIVELY ADVOCATE FOR MENTAL HEALTH. ALSO, OVER 1,200 ADVOCATES REGISTERED FOR MENTAL HEALTH DAY AT THE CAPITOL, IN WHICH NAMI GEORGIA PARTICIPATED AS A MEMBER OF THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES COALITION.
