Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO ENGAGE COMMUNITIES TO ACTIVATE THE POWER OF PARKS.
FRIENDS OF THE PARK -- THE FRIENDS OF THE PARK PROGRAM IS THE CORE OF PARK PRIDE'S WORK. THE PROGRAM HELPS TO BUILD AND SUPPORT COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO CREATE POSITIVE, LONG-LASTING CHANGE IN THEIR PARKS. PARK PRIDE PROVIDES THE GROUPS WITH STRUCTURE, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND GUIDANCE AS WELL AS A WIDE RANGE OF RESOURCES TO HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS. "FRIENDS" GROUPS HAVE ACCESS TO TOOLS, VOLUNTEERS, MATCHING GRANTS, DESIGN SERVICES, FUNDRAISING GUIDANCE AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES. IN 2019, THE FRIENDS OF THE PARK PROGRAM ENGAGED PARK ENTHUSIASTS IN 146 CITY OF ATLANTA AND DEKALB COUNTY PARKS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WE OFFERED WORKSHOPS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES BUILD LEADERSHIP SKILLS, SHARE RESOURCES, AND LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE LOCAL PARKS. MONTHLY NETWORKING MEETINGS PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEIGHBORHOOD PARK ADVOCATES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, SHARE CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES AND LEARN BEST PRACTICES FOR ADDRESSING PARK CHALLENGES.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS -- IN 2019, PARK PRIDE INVESTED IN 41 PARK IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS. THESE FUNDS CAME FROM A RANGE OF SOURCES INCLUDING DONATIONS TO FISCAL PARTNER GROUPS, FUNDS AWARDED THROUGH PARK PRIDE'S LEGACY, COMMUNITY BUILDING AND SMALL CHANGE GRANT PROGRAMS AND PHILANTHROPIC GIFTS DESIGNATED FOR SPECIFIC CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS IN PARKS. THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR 2019 CAPITAL INVESTMENTS WAS THE COMPLETION OF KATHRYN JOHNSTON MEMORIAL PARK IN THE ENGLISH AVENUE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE PARK'S OPENING WAS THE CULMINATION OF A MULTI-YEAR EFFORT TO REALIZE THE COMMUNITY'S DREAM OF TRANSFORMING CONTAMINATED FLOOD-PRONE VACANT PROPERTIES INTO A VIBRANT GREENSPACE. PARK PRIDE WORKED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CONSERVATION FUND AND THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVERKEEPER TO DESIGN AND BUILD A PARK THAT INCORPORATE GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS TO MITIGATE THE AREA'S CHRONIC FLOODING WHILE PROVIDING A SAFE AND ENGAGING PLACE FOR CHILDREN TO PLAY AND NEIGHBORS TO GATHER.
PARK VISIONING -- FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, PARK PRIDE'S PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT STAFF HAS LED COMMUNITIES THROUGH A COLLABORATIVE PROCESS TO DEVELOP A CONCEPTUAL MASTER PLAN FOR THEIR PARKS. THROUGH THE OPEN DIALOGUE THAT PARK PRIDE FACILITATES, COMMUNITIES ARE ABLE TO ARTICULATE THEIR NEEDS AND DESIRES AND BUILD CONSENSUS AROUND A COLLECTIVE VISION FOR THEIR PARK. THE RESULTING VISION PLAN THAT NOT ONLY ENERGIZES THE COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE, BUT ALSO BECOMES A POWERFUL TOOL TO SOLICIT FUNDING. AS A RESULT, MORE THAN $23 MILLION DOLLARS IN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC FUNDING HAS GONE TOWARD IMPLEMENTING THESE COMMUNITY CREATED PARK VISIONS.IN 2019, PARK PRIDE'S PARK VISIONING TEAM WORKED WITH COMMUNITIES TO DEVELOP CONCEPTUAL PARK PLANS FOR MOZLEY PARK AND LANG-CARSON PARK (CITY OF ATLANTA); AND DEKALB MEMORIAL PARK, AND NEEDHAM PARK (DEKALB COUNTY) AND CONDUCTED DESIGN CONSULTATIONS FOR 27 OTHER COMMUNITIES.2019 ALSO MARKED THE BEGINNING OF THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY SCHOOLYARDS PROJECT- A PILOT PROJECT TO OPEN UNDERUTILIZED SCHOOLYARDS TO COMMUNITIES IN AREAS THAT LACK ACCESS TO GREENSPACE. IN A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND AND THE URBAN LAND INSTITUTE, PARK PRIDE LED VISIONING EFFORTS FOR THE FIRST TWO PILOT SCHOOLS IN THE PROGRAM- JOHN WESLEY DOBBS ELEMENTARY AND L.O. KIMBERLY ELEMENTARY- WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITIES TO IDENTIFY THE INVESTMENTS NEEDED TO TRANSFORM THEIR SCHOOLYARDS INTO VIBRANT COMMUNITY SPACES.
