Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Museum provides an opportunity to engage, to learn, and be inspired in through Steffens life, art, and legacy. As a single artist museum, it uses its art collection for education, through on-site exhibits and programs for children and adults in rural NE and Middle Georgia.
Exhibitions -- Special exhibitions, which include work by living regional artists as well as Thomass, inform and inspire all our programs. The more permanent displays of Thomass work are located in the Main Gallery, History Gallery, and Steffen Thomas Family Gallery. Temporary exhibits are housed in the West Gallery. Seven different temporary exhibitions were presented in FY 2019-2020. Two major exhibitions were Black Heritage and the Brotherhood of Man and Art as Experience: Richard Olsen and the Vietnam War. Receptions, gallery talks and panel discussions were offered, both in person and virtually, through the website, Facebook, and other social media outlets. The Museum is open to the public on a regular schedule, Tuesday - Saturday, 11:00 - 4:00. Gallery talks and free receptions are offered to the public. 3000-4000 people visited the museum in person or virtually during fiscal year 2019-2020.
College Connections -- This program provides opportunities for college art students to exhibit their work, wrtie about art, or learn about museum practices. In FY 2019-2020 serveral college interns worked closely under the supervision of museum staff on curatorial practices and archival work with the collection.
A Day at the Steffen Thomas Museum -- This program is a field trip for rural K-12 students in surrounding counties, which provides a chance to visit a fine arts museum near home and to try unusual art techniques used by Thomas, in guided workshops. Tours are led by trained docents and an experienced Art Outreach Coordinator teaches the workshops. Distance Learning launched in FY 2019-2020 as an alternative for teachers and students to engage while we all weatherd the COVID-19 pandemic, provided individual art kits and lessons for students. Over 550 children visited in person, before the schools shut dowm because of the pandemic.
