GEORGIA MUSEUMS, INC. IS A GEORGIA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION, WHICH OPERATES THE BARTOW HISTORY MUSEUM ("BHM"), BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM, AND TELLUS SCIENCE MUSEUM. THE BOOTH EDUCATES, ENTERTAINS AND INSPIRES GUESTS THROUGH THE EXPLORATION OF WESTERN ART, POPULAR CULTURE, AND AMERICAN HERITAGE IN A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT. THE BHM'S MISSION IS TO PRESERVE BARTOW COUNTY'S HISTORY, EDUCATE A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS AND VISITORS ABOUT ITS UNIQUE HERITAGE, AND TO CELEBRATE ITS SENSE OF PLACE THROUGH EXHIBITS, PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES PRESENTED IN AN ENGAGING AND PLEASANT MANNER. TELLUS' MISSION IS "BECAUSE SCIENCE MATTERS, WE ENGAGE, EDUCATE AND INSPIRE VISITORS TO MAKE SCIENTIFIC CONNECTIONS THROUGH DYNAMIC EXHIBITS AND ENRICHING EXPERIENCES."
THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF GEORGIA MUSEUMS, INC. IS THE OPERATION OF THREE MUSEUMS: BARTOW HISTORY MUSEUM, BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM, AND TELLUS SCIENCE MUSEUM. GEORGIA MUSEUMS, INC. SEEKS TO PROVIDE QUALITY CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES WHILE PRESERVING ITS COLLECTIONS.
THE BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM IS A 120,000 SQUARE-FOOT FACILITY CONTAINING GALLERIES OF WESTERN CONTEMPORARY ART. ADDITIONAL GALLERIES FEATURE PRESIDENTIAL LETTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, CIVIL WAR ART, AND FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY. THERE ARE FOUR TEMPORARY GALLERIES WHERE CHANGING EXHIBITS ARE SHOWN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. DURING CALENDAR YEAR 2020, 20,537 INDIVIDUALS VISITED THE MUSEUM (THIS WAS DOWN FROM A RECORD 68,370 IN 2019. DUE TO COVID-19, THE MUSEUM WAS CLOSED FROM MARCH 15 TO JUNE 15, AND THEREAFTER WAS OPEN WITH VISITATION RESTRICTIONS.) DURING SCHOOL YEAR 2019-2020, 7,567 STUDENTS VISITED THE BOOTH FOR AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OR EXPERIENCE. (THIS NUMBER WAS PARTIALLY IMPACTED BY COVID-19, WITH FEWER STUDENTS VISITING IN MARCH 2020 AND NONE IN APRIL OR MAY, 2020.) THE BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM HAS APPROXIMATELY 1,414 ACTIVE MEMBERS. EACH MONTH THE MUSEUM OFFERS EVENING LECTURES, ART FOR LUNCH PROGRAMS, ART CLASSES, IN ADDITION TO OUR YEARLY SIGNATURE EVENTS, THE CHUCK WAGON GATHERING AND SOUTHEASTERN COWBOY FESTIVAL AND SYMPOSIUM. THE MUSEUM HAS A SATELLITE GALLERY THAT SELLS ARTWORK FROM LOCAL ARTISTS, AS WELL AS PRINTS, POSTERS, AND BOOKS.
TELLUS SCIENCE MUSEUM, A 120,000 SQUARE-FOOT SCIENCE MUSEUM, INCLUDES A MINERAL GALLERY, FOSSIL GALLERY, HANDS-ON CHILDREN'S SCIENCE GALLERY, A SCIENCE OF MOTORIZED TRANSPORTATION GALLERY, AND A GEM PANNING AND FOSSIL DIG AREA (TEMPORARILY CLOSED AS A PRECAUTION BECAUSE OF COVID-19). THERE ARE THREE SPACES WHERE TEMPORARY EXHIBITS ARE HOSTED DURING THE YEAR. IN ADDITION THERE IS A DIGITAL PLANETARIUM, OBSERVATORY, THEATER, FOUR SCIENCE LABS, STORE, AND CAFE. IN CALENDAR YEAR 2020, TELLUS HAD 73,103 VISITORS, INCLUDING 30,196 PEOPLE SEEING A PLANETARIUM SHOW. THESE NUMBERS ARE 36% AND 38% RESPECTIVELY FROM WHAT THEY WERE LAST YEAR BECAUSE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC DRAMATICALLY REDUCED PUBLIC AND STUDENT VISITATION. DURING SCHOOL YEAR 2019-2020, 30,910 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS THESE NUMBERS ARE LOWER THAN USUAL BECAUSE THE LAST FIVE MONTHS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR WERE IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. TELLUS SCIENCE MUSEUM HAS 2971 ACTIVE MEMBERS AS OF DECEMBER 31, 2020.
THE BARTOW HISTORY MUSEUM IS A 10,000 SQUARE-FOOT HISTORY MUSEUM LOCATED IN A RESTORED 1869 COURTHOUSE. VISITORS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT BARTOW COUNTY AND SURROUNDING AREA LOCAL HISTORY THROUGH EXHIBITS FEATURING ARTIFACTS THAT TRACE MORE THAN 200 YEARS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY. CHANGING EXHIBITS, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, LECTURES, AND WORKSHOPS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, HELP TELL THE STORY AS WELL. AT A NEARBY LOCATION, THE MUSEUM ALSO HOUSES AN ARCHIVES AND RESEARCH LIBRARY OPEN FOR PUBLIC RESEARCH. DURING CALENDAR YEAR 2020, 4,068 INDIVIDUALS VISITED THE MUSEUM AND/OR ARCHIVES. DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR, 7,200 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE BARTOW HISTORY MUSEUM HAS 315 ACTIVE MEMBERS. DURING THE YEAR THE MUSEUM HOLDS EVENING LECTURE PROGRAMS, LUNCH AND LEARN PROGRAMS, AND WORKSHOPS. THE SIGNATURE EVENTS ARE AN ANNUAL CEMETERY TOUR, SPOOKY MUSEUM, AND OLD FASHIONED CHRISTMAS.
