The Craddock Center serves people of Southern Appalachia, especially preschool children. Our primary program provides storytelling and music to 1240 pre-K and Head Start children, seeking to enhance school readiness and engagement.
The Children's Enrichment Program (CEP) serves approximately 1,240 children in nine counties across three states. Biweekly or greater music and movement and storytelling lessons are provided completely free of charge to children in head start and pre-k classrooms. This arts enrichement program is vitally important to developing critical thinking skills, school engagement, language development, and pre-emergent literacy skills. Of teachers surveyed, 85% reported an increase in singing and/or use of songs in play, and 71% reported their students had an increased listening span. A majority of teachers reported their students used vocabulary derived from the stories told via CEP in play and writing (65%), in retelling the stories (75%), and in verbalizing their pleasure from hearing the story (79%). The Children's Enrichment Program was temporarily discontinued in March of 2020 due to COVID-19. We hope to resume the program in September of 2021.
The Living Room is a furniture, mattresses and housewares outreach program stocked wholly from donations from our surrounding community. This outreach of The Craddock Center frew significantly during the 2019 - 2020 year. Our donations grew and so did the numbers of families and individuals who need basic items. During this timeframe we served 108 individuals and families. Used and occasionally new furniture and household items are shared with families who are in crisis, recovering from fire, eviction, mold infestation, or family violence. We often see young families with small children visiting The Living Room in search of very simple items such as a table, a chair, or a set of dishes. The Living Room is open every day for donations and open to families to select their items two days a week.
On the last Saturday in January, The Craddock Center offers Songs & Stories in honor of Helen Lewis. This annual performance includes musicians and storytellers who share the best of Appalachia's unique culture and traditions. In 2020, over 150 people attended a performance by local musicians, Gopher Broke, as well as popular performer and storyteller, Rosie the Riveter. Youth Storyteller who won the 2019 Storytelling Competition in their schools provided an entertaining and engaging evening for us all.
