Organizations Filed Purposes:
Empower grassroots community members to transform their communities into places where:a) mutual respect and cooperation prevails between foreign-born and native born residents; and b)Immigrants feel welcome, and therefore more likely to integrate into the social fabric.
In 2019, using its innovative, place-based approach, Welcoming America worked with partners to create a climate and policy environment where more individuals including immigrants and refugees were able to participate more fully in social, civic and economic life, contributing to a more prosperous and vibrant community for all. This included establishing new infrastructure in communities to support immigrant inclusion, as well as the creation of new policies and practices in localities that helped to build bridges between new and long-time residents; expand economic opportunity; increase equitable access to services, and enable more New Americans to participate in civic life.To provide a roadmap for immigrant inclusion and hold communities accountable, Welcoming America expanded the program Certified Welcoming in 2019 -- based on the Welcoming Standard, a comprehensive set of policies, programs, processes, and partnerships that are core to immigrant inclusion.Academic research has reaffirmed the ties between welcoming immigrants and the economic, social, and civic health of communities. Recent studies include data correlating local immigrant communities with greater direct foreign investment (The Journal of Finance, http://bit.ly/2wnvrcP), contribute to local economic growth (USC Dornsife Program, Everett Programhttp://bit.ly/2wBlc4g), and counterbalancing population decline in Midwestern communities (The Chicago Council on Global Affairs, http://bit.ly/1PRjHRG).In furtherance of this impact, Welcoming America grew and connected the movement of leaders working to foster inclusive communities, building a growing network of 200 local government and nonprofit members working in 400 communities. The organization also reached over 2,000 leaders through trainings, delivering tools, and providing expertise on building welcoming communities.Welcoming America also grew the welcoming movement through events and campaigns that engaged thousands of Americans. Welcoming Week, hosted in September of 2019 saw more than 3,000 events across the country. For more on Welcoming Americas accomplishments and stories of impact, please visit www.welcomingamerica.org
