Ballethnic Dance Company is a classically trained, culturally diverse company. Ballethnic's goal is to inform, educate, and entertain through the art of dance by lecturing, teaching and performing. The mission of Ballethnic is to inform, educate and entertain through dance, using dance as a vehicle to impact the community by offering programs that act as a catalyst for social change.
Fy 20 started the new season with activities including the Dance Diversity Summer Camp which culminated with a performance at the Bowden Center in East Point. Ballethnic participated in several invited community performances, such as Ushers New Look Performance, Southface Performance, and River Arts Productions - The Jungle Book throughout the fall. Auditions for Urban Nutcracker were held in July and September. The Fall Academy of Dance Session began in September along with Urban Nutcracker rehearsals. The professional dance company staged the annual Urban Nutcracker production at Morehouse King Chapel in December. The three performances welcomed a total of over 3200 attendees. Urban Nutcracker Wonderland was also performed at Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center. Ballethnic celebrated its thirtieth anniversary on January 15, 2020. Classes continued in the Academy through Mid-March. The planned March Spring production of the companys signature ballet -The Leopard Tale was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID19 pandemic, which led to a restriction of large gatherings nationwide.For the year ended June 30, 2020 Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. operated the following programs:BALLETHNIC ACADEMY OF DANCE: Professional dance instructors provided training for all skill levels (age 3 adult) at our East Point studios from July 2019 - March 2020 until the Pandemic preempted in person classes. Ballethnic shifted to a model of virtual classes utilizing the Zoom platform. Virtual teacher training was held during this time. The May Open House student performance was held virtually with a greatly reduced number of students due to the Pandemic. When it was deemed safe to open Ballethnic created socially distanced summer workshops in June utilizing Covid 19 safety precautions. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. also provided a free outdoor Culture Cul De Sac event to provide a healing forum for Ballethnic families to convene to express themselves during the riots. It was held on its outdoor stage. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc.s Youth, Professionals as well as other community performers supplied an array of talent to the event. Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc. has a long-term commitment in supporting women and girls in our community not only as participants in the dance training programs, but as company members, artistic and administrative staff, Board of Directors, parents, & community volunteers. The success of the personal development and leadership program Beyond the Barre program is particularly rewarding. Skills obtained from the formal convening of Beyond the Barre were used to allow dancers to express themselves as the small groups gathered in the Summer classes. BALLETHNIC YOUTH ENSEMBLE (BYE): In this pre-professional training and dance ensemble for young people ages 7 to adult, participants receive an advanced level of instruction and undergo intense training, exercise, and self-discipline to improve their craft. Due to the Pandemic and loss of jobs and fear this program was placed on hiatus. SCHOOL PERFORMANCES: Due to the size of the venue and late date (December 11), we garnered enough attendees for one school show at Morehouse King Chapel.DANCE DIVERSITY SUMMER ARTS CAMP Dance training and exposure to the performing arts is offered through Ballethnic Dance Company, Inc.s summer classes. Dance Diversity Summer Camp is a 4-week program that targets ages 5- 18 held the last week of June - late July. Guest artists teach dance, drumming, African history, songs, and music. Approximately 50 students attended beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes. Summer performances take place around the South Fulton/East Point community including recreation centers, schools, churches, art centers, etc. Classes culminate in a community performance and open house at the Bowden Multipurpose Center reaching approximately 100 residents. The theme was Meet the Animals of The Leopard Tale where students successfully learned and performed steps from the signature Ballet. DANSEUR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: The Danseur Development Project is designed as a creative tool for young men to express themselves through intense athletic training and body movement. Waverly Lucas provides one-on-one training to youth ages 6-21 primarily in the East Point community. Young men in their mid to late twenties who have started their dance careers at a late stage also participate in the classes. Weekly classes are offered September-May on the weekends and after school. The teachers have succeeded in involving the youth and their fathers in a program, which encourages positive role models for young males. OUTREACH PROGRAMS/ LECTURES DEMONSTRATIONS AND WORKSHOPS: A wide variety of school performances, community productions, lectures, exhibitions (costume design, dance history), artist talks, and mini workshops are being offered online via Zoom, and Webex. This allows greater access to all parts of the Fulton County community Athens Clarke County (special initiative) and Nationally.
