National Heritage Areas NHA are designated by Congress as places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive and nationally important landscape. There are currently 49 NHA's. NHA's are not National Park Service NPS units. Rather, NPS distributes matching federal funds from Congress to NHA entities. In 2006, the Alliance was designated as the NHA management entity by Congress. The Alliance is to oversee the activities within the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area AMNHA. The Alliance strives to preserve the Heritage Area's assets, link key sites together and promote educational and tourism opportunities. Its overarching purpose is to protect, connect and educate through five specific means: 1 Preservation & Conserv

Arabia Mountain Heritage Area Alliance is dedicated to protecting, connecting and sharing the unique history, rich culture and engaging landscapes of the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area for the benefit and enjoyment of all generations.

Planning and Community Development - Explore, develop, and .implement strategies for Congressional reauthorization of enabling NHA legislation. Support the development and designation of local historic disticts or other zoning tools which will protect the landscapes, historic buildings and character of the NHA. Support the Historic Resource Survey in cooperation with the City of Stonecrest and the Atlanta Regional Commission. Support partner organizations that meet the criteria of the adopted grant guidelines through sub-grants of NPS to support non-profit sustainability, historic and cultural protection, and special events.

Preservation and Conservation - In 2019 we led and managed the continuation of five historic preservation projects with a primary work focus on restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse, and reconstruction. As a public gathering space for the community we sold the Lithonia Woman's Club to a local business woman and used preservation easements to insure it's original form; stabilized the Lyon Farmhouse and served as the agent for a $225,000 contract for reconstruction oversight; partnered with Georgia State Parks to stabilize Vaughter's Barn valued at $200,000 and now safe for public use; formed a task force with the City of Lithonia to begin the process of stabilizing the Historic Bruce Street Ruins; and established the Arabia Mountain overlay as a tool to encourage sensitive development utilizing the topography and natural features of the area.

Promotion and Outreach - Lead seventh-annual Monadnock Madness hiking promotional throughout the month of March with 5 guided Triples Hikes, 1 geocaching challenge, mountaintop yoga, and 2 photography workshops along with activities hosted and led by our partner sites (over 250 participants). We have supplied rack cards, bike maps, NPS-style folios and flyers to partners throughout the National Heritiage Area and beyond. Including Georgia Welcome Centers in Ringgold, Tallapoosa and St. Marys, GA; the Conyers, GA visitors center; Discover Dekalb Convention/Visitors Bureau; and our partners within the NHA to include the City of Lithonia, the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, Panola Mountain State Park, Monastery of the Holy Spirit and Flat Rock Archives. The Alliance adopted an editorial calendar and have been working closely with KWSM digital media consultants for more effective digital media across the board. Through these efforts, we have significantly increased our digital reach, including 18% growth in Facebook likes and a 14% increase in website traffic. Lastly, we are beginning long-term planning for a website upgrade and communication strategy.
