Organizations Filed Purposes: FOXFIRE'S MISSION IS TO PRESERVE THE DIVERSE TRADITIONS OF SOUTHERN APPALACHIA AND ADVANCE THE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH PUBIC PROGRAMS, PUBLICATIONS, AND LEARNER-CENTERED EDUCATION.

FOXFIRE OPERATES AN OUTDOOR APPALACHIAN VILLAGE MUSEUM FEATURING OVER TWENTY HISTORIC LOG STRUCTURES AND ARTIFACTS REPRESENTATIVE OF LIFE IN THE MOUNTAINS. APPROXIMATELY 6000 INDIVIDUALS AND OVER 1700 STUDENTS VISITED THE MUSEUM DURING 2019. ARTISANS AND CRAFTERS PROVIDED LIVE ONSITE DEMONSTRATIONS OF APPALACHIAN COOKERY, WEAVING, CHAIR CANING, BROOM MAKING, AND OTHER SKILLS. SUMMER PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTED APPALACHIAN MUSIC, STORY TELLING, COOKING, FORAGING AND MORE. THE MUSEUM'S ARCHIVES INCLUDE A SIGNIFICANT ORAL HISTORY COLLECTION, ARTIFACTS AND RELATED DOCUMENTS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE FOR ACADEMIC AND STAFF RESEARCH. THE MUSEUM STORE FEATURES THE WORKS OF APPALACHIAN ARTISANS AND CRAFTERS AS WELL AS THE FOXFIRE BOOKS WHICH PRESERVE AND CELEBRATE APPALACHIAN CULTURE. DURING 2019, FOXFIRE MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS ON RENOVATION OF SEVERAL ONSITE APPALACHIAN CABINS, IMPROVED SIGNAGE, AND CREATED A MOBILE APP TO ENHANCE THE MUSEUM VISITOR'S EXPERIENCE, INCORPORATING FIRST HAND STORIES FROM THE ORAL HISTORY ARCHIVES. IN ADDITION, THE MUSEUM WALKING TRAIL, CONNECTING TO ADJACENT BLACK ROCK STATE PARK, OPENED IN 2019.

FROM ITS INCEPTION IN 1966, THE FOXFIRE PROGRAM HAS FOCUSED ON INNOVATIVE LEARNER-CENTERED EDUCATION TO DEVELOP RESEARCH, INTERVIEW, AND WRITING SKILLS. THE FOXFIRE JUNIOR FELLOW PROGRAM CONTINUED THAT TRADITION WITH SIX HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM RABUN COUNTY, GEORGIA SCHOOLS PARTICIPATING THROUGHOUT 2019. FOXFIRE FELLOWS BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION OF SCHOLARSHIPS FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION. DURING 2019, FOXFIRE FUNDED $40,500 IN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NINE COLLEGE STUDENTS. THE FOXFIRE EDUCATION TEAM WAS FORMED TO REVISE THE FOXFIRE APPROACH TO TEACHING WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS, INCORPORATING STREAMLINED AND MORE ACCESSIBLE CORE PRACTICES FOR CONTEMPORARY EDUCATORS. THE EDUCATION TEAM ALSO BEGAN DEVELOPING LESSON PLANS, CONSISTENT WITH THE GEORGIA STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE, FOR TEACHERS TO USE AS FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES AFTER GUIDED STUDENT TOURS AT THE MUSEUM.

FOXFIRE'S LONG HISTORY OF BOOK PUBLICATIONS CONTINUED IN 2019 WITH RELEASE OF AN UPDATED EDITION OF THE FOXFIRE BOOK OF APPALACHIAN COOKERY CONTAINING HUNDREDS OF DELECTABLE RECIPES AND THE RIVETING STORIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE COOKED THIS WAY FOR GENERATIONS. FOXFIRE'S MOLASSES BREAD RECIPE WAS FEATURED NATIONALLY IN AN OCTOBER 2019 SPLENDID TABLE EPISODE CELEBRATING FOOD AND ITS ABILITY TO TOUCH THE LIVES AND FEED THE SOULS OF EVERYONE. SEMIANNUAL ISSUES OF FOXFIRE MAGAZINE WERE PRODUCED IN 2019, AND FOXFIRE PERSONNEL CONTRIBUTED SEVERAL FOXFIRE COLUMNS TO LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES. FOXFIRE'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TRAVELED TO GUANGZHOU CHINA UPON INVITATION FROM THE AMERICAN FOLKLORE SOCIETY AND THE CHINESE FOLKLORE SOCIETY TO PRESENT FOXFIRE'S HERITAGE PRESERVATION WORK TO AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE AT THE SUMMER FOLKLORE INSTITUTE. FOXFIRE STAFF PRODUCED VARIOUS PODCASTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS AS PART OF THE ORGANIZATION'S OUTREACH PROGRAMMING DURING 2019.
