Organizations Filed Purposes:
Changing the lives of individuals with physical disabilities through adaptive sport and physical activity
Local/State Programs & Services:Georgia sport, physical activity and recreation programs coordinated and implemented in the community and schools throughout metro-Atlanta and Georgia to improve the health, school performance, community reintegration, and quality of life of children, young adults, and veterans with physical disabilities. Develop educational and enrichment opportunities for young people with physical disabilities to develop leadership and pre-vocational skills (Youth L.E.A.D. and Veteran T.E.A.M. initiatives). Blazesports' equipment loan program loans individuals and organizations in Georgia and us adaptive sport chairs and equipment to reduce the cost prohibitive barrier of equipment costs. The equipment loan programs aim to increase individual participation in adaptive sport and increase the number of adaptive sport offerings throughout Georgia. During 2019, there was a total participation of 2,992 individuals with disabilities served through various adaptive sport and physical activity programs, Youth L.E.A.D., Veteran T.E.A.M. and equipment loan program.
National programs & services:Education, technical assistance and resource development translates science into training, education, and certification opportunities targeting students/universities, local service providers and volunteers to encourage best-practice in the fields of adaptive sport and physical activity. Educational offerings including the certified Adaptive Recreation and Sports Specialist (the only certification of its kind), web-based resources, and training workshop and webinars are utilized to increase awareness and improve the quality and quantity of adaptive sport and physical activity programs. In 2019, six webinars/workshops were held on various adaptive sport programming topics with a total of 440 coaches and service providers trained. 150 professionals, volunteers and students were certified or renewed their certification through Blazesports' certification initiative.
International Programs & Service:Blazesports implements sport for development projects throughout the developing world as a vehicle to improved health, quality of life and greater inclusion of people with physical disabilities in all aspects of society. International programs focus on building the capacity of local leaders through training and train-the-trainer workshops on developing and implementing inclusive sport and physical activity programs and how to use sport as a tool for inclusion. International programs also include high profile national sport festivals for people with and without disabilities in target countries. In 2019, Blazesports in collaboration with the Uganda Paralympic Committee and trainers implemented a 1 day sports summit and training workshop in Kampala. 105 service providers from Kampala and Gulu regions attended. A total of 262 children with and without physical disabilities participated in an inclusive adaptive sports festival in Kampala. A call to action document was developed by Blazesports and partners on how to increase opportunities to increase youth with disabilities participation in sport.
