TO ACHIEVE OUR MISSION OF OFFERING COMPELLING EXPRESSIONS OF VISUAL CULTURE, WE CONCENTRATE ON FOUR AREAS: 1) COLLECTIONS - ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARKS AND FOCUSED ART COLLECTIONS THAT REFLECT A HISTORY OF EMBRACING CONTEMPORARY VISUAL CULTURE; 2) EDUCATION - PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN THAT SERVE AS CATALYSTS FOR CREATIVITY AND LEARNING; 3) EXHIBITIONS - PRESENTATIONS OF REGIONAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE THAT PROVIDE ACCESS TO ART OF DIVERSE ERAS AND CULTURES; & 4) COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT - PARTNERSHIPS AND INITIATIVES THAT STRENGTHEN TIES TO DIVERSE AUDIENCES AND ENCOURAGE ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT IN COMMUNITY LIFE.
THE TELFAIR MUSEUM OF ART OFFERS COMPELLING EXPRESSIONS OF VISUAL CULTURE - EMBRACING THREE UNIQUE BUILDINGS AND THREE DISTINCT COLLECTIONS THAT BRIDGE THREE CENTURIES OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE. THE MUSEUM DEVELOPS AWARENESS, UNDERSTANDING, AND APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS AND SERVES AS A DYNAMIC CULTURAL CENTER CONNECTING PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS.
EXHIBITIONS - IN 2019, TELFAIR MUSEUMS PRESENTED 35 EXHIBITIONS, 32 OF WHICH WERE ORGANIZED BY TELFAIR STAFF. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE KEITA TAKAHASHI: ZOOMING OUT, THE FIRST MUSEUM EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE WORK OF THIS LEGENDARY VIDEOGAME DESIGNER. SUZANNE JACKSON: FIVE DECADES WAS THE FIRST FULL-CAREER SURVEY DEVOTED TO THIS IMPORTANT AMERICAN ARTIST AND INCLUDED HER CONNECTIONS TO DANCE, THEATRE AND COSTUME DESIGN, POETRY, AND SOCIAL ACTIVISM. IN THE FALL OF 2019, ALL MAJOR GALLERIES WERE GIVEN OVER TO THE MONUMENTAL EXHIBITION SUMMON THE SEA CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND MOBY DICK, WHICH BROUGHT TOGETHER WORK BY SIX CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS WHO ACT AS EPIC STORYTELLERS AS THEY RESPOND TO, CHALLENGE, AND CELEBRATE THE ALLEGORIES PRESENTED IN MELVILLE'S LITERARY CLASSIC THROUGH LARGE-SCALE SCULPTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTS, AND VIDEO MADE SINCE 1985.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS - 6,841 PRE-K THROUGH COLLEGE STUDENTS VISITED THE MUSEUMS FOR EDUCATIONAL TOURS IN 2019. OF THESE, NEARLY 3,000 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN FREE DISCUSSION-BASED TOURS OF THE EXHIBITION SUMMON THE SEA CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND MOBY DICK AND AN ADDITIONAL 400 PARTICIPATED IN FREE TOURS FOR TITLE 1 SCHOOLS. OVER 2,000 INDIVIDUALS, INCLUDING MORE THAN 800 CHILDREN WERE SERVED IN OVER 150 OUTREACH PROGRAMS TO NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS, SCHOOLS AND VISITS TO OUTREACH SITES FROM GOLDEN AGE CENTERS TO HOSPITALS AND ORGANIZATIONS SERVING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND VETERANS. 29 EVENING LECTURE, FILM AND PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS WERE ATTENDED BY NEARLY 2,700 PARTICIPANTS. 3,200 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN THE LARGELY FREE PULSE ART AND TECHNOLOGY FESTIVAL. 7,675 INDIVIDUALS OF ALL AGES ATTENDED SIX FREE FAMILY DAYS. MORE THAN 300 CHILDREN ATTENDED PRE-K, TODDLER AND HEAD START PROGRAMS. 41 STUDIO CLASSES, CAMPS AND WORKSHOPS, WERE OFFERED AND ATTENDED BY NEARLY 1,000 ADULT AND YOUTH REGISTRANTS AND 20 STUDENTS RECEIVED FREE SCHOLARSHIPS. 2,500 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN DAILY DROP IN STUDIO ART MAKING PROGRAMS. 21 STUDENTS TOOK PART IN THE MUSEUM'S TEEN COUNCIL, PARTICIPATED IN MONTHLY PROGRAMS, AND ORGANIZED AN ART EXHIBITION FOR LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
COLLECTIONS - CURRENTLY, THE TELFAIR HOLDS OVER 7,000 WORKS OF ART, INCLUDING PAINTINGS, WORKS ON PAPER, SCULPTURE, FURNITURE, DECORATIVE ARTS AND TWO HISTORIC HOMES. THESE WORKS ARE PRIMARILY FROM EUROPE AND AMERICA, RANGING IN DATE FROM THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY THROUGH THE PRESENT. IN 2019, THE TELFAIR ACQUIRED 93 WORKS FOR THE COLLECTION, LARGELY THROUGH GIFTS. THESE ACQUISITIONS INCLUDE PAINTINGS, WORKS ON PAPER, PHOTOGRAPHS, MIXED MEDIA AND DECORATIVE ART OBJECTS. THESE WORKS HAVE HELPED TO AUGMENT AND DIVERSIFY THE TELFAIR'S PERMANENT COLLECTION.
