HABITAT WORKED WITH MORE THAN 5.9 MILLION PEOPLE TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO NEW OR IMPROVED HOUSING SOMEWHERE AROUND THE WORLD. HABITATS TRAINING AND ADVOCACY ENABLED MORE THAN 9.9 MILLION PEOPLE THE POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE THEIR HOUSING CONDITIONS. IN THE UNITED STATES (U.S.) AND CANADA, HABITAT ASSISTED MORE THAN 29,400 INDIVIDUALS THROUGH NEW CONSTRUCTION, HOME REHABILITATION AND REPAIRS. OTHER EXAMPLES OF HABITATS WORK IN THE U.S. AND CANADA INCLUDE: - HABITATS ADVOCACY EFFORTS SUCCESSFULLY HELPED CHANGE OR ENACT 506 POLICIES AT THE STATE AND LOCAL LEVEL IN THE U.S. THESE POLICIES IMPACT MORE THAN 407,700 PEOPLE AND ACCESS OR ALLOCATE MORE THAN $544 MILLION FOR ADEQUATE HOUSING. - HABITAT OPERATES 1,025 RESTORES IN THE U.S. AND IN FIVE ADDITIONAL COUNTRIES. A TOTAL OF 889 RESTORES CAN BE FOUND ACROSS THE U.S., WITH AN ADDITIONAL 136 IN CANADA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, NORTHERN IRELAND AND POLAND. - HABITAT INVESTED MORE THAN $146 MILLION IN AFFILIATES THAT IMPLEMENT NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION PROJECTS, BRINGING TOGETHER RESIDENTS AND PARTNERS IN COMMUNITIES AROUND THE U.S. TO COLLABORATE, MAXIMIZE RESOURCES AND FOSTER THRIVING COMMUNITIES.
INTERNATIONAL HABITAT OPERATES IN APPROXIMATELY 70 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD, WORKING WITH NATIONAL HABITAT ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHER PARTNERS TO EXPAND ACCESS TO DECENT AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING. HABITATS WORK IS GROUPED INTO FOUR GEOGRAPHIC AREAS FOR ADMINISTRATIVE PURPOSES: THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA; LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN; ASIA AND THE PACIFIC; AND EUROPE, THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA. IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC, 116,805 PEOPLE WORKED WITH HABITAT ON NEW CONSTRUCTION, REHABILITATIONS, INCREMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIRS. AN ADDITIONAL 31,405 INDIVIDUALS BENEFITED FROM PROFESSIONAL SERVICES PERFORMED BY HABITAT AND OUR PARTNERS. THROUGH MARKET DEVELOPMENT WORK AND CIVIL SOCIETY FACILITATION, WHERE INDIVIDUALS ARE SERVED WITH BETTER HOUSING THROUGH THE PRIVATE SECTOR AS A RESULT OF A HABITAT PROGRAM, 1.8 MILLION PEOPLE BENEFITED. OTHER SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE AREA INCLUDE: -HABITAT DEPLOYED A MOBILE UNIT TO BRING HOUSING CONSTRUCTION AND IMPROVEMENT SERVICES TO MARGINALIZED FAMILIES IN KERALA, INDIA, DURING COVID-19. HABITAT INDIA HOPES TO REACH 300,000 PEOPLE WITH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND VITAL INFORMATION THROUGH THIS SERVICE. -HABITAT WORKED IN 22 COUNTRIES IN ASIA, AFRICA, LATIN AMERICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST TO IMPROVE SANITATION, INCREASING ACCESS TO SAFE BATHROOMS AND UPGRADING NEIGHBORHOOD DRAINAGE TO PROMOTE HEALTHIER LIVING CONDITIONS. IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN, 95,020 INDIVIDUALS WORKED ALONGSIDE HABITAT ON NEW CONSTRUCTION, REHABILITATIONS, INCREMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIRS. AN ADDITIONAL 22,750 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM PROFESSIONAL SERVICES PROVIDED BY HABITAT AND OUR PARTNERS. MARKET DEVELOPMENT WORK AND CIVIL SOCIETY FACILITATION HELPED APPROXIMATELY 1.8 MILLION PEOPLE. OTHER SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE AREA INCLUDE: -HABITAT HELPED 2,431 HOUSEHOLDS IN GUATEMALAS SACATEPQUEZ PROVINCE TO INSTALL SMOKELESS STOVES. BUILT FROM ADOBE BLOCKS AND FEATURING A PIPE THAT TAKES HARMFUL SMOKE OUT OF THE HOME, THE STOVES REDUCE EYE IRRITATION, HELP IMPROVE HEALTH AND REDUCE FIREWOOD USE BY UP TO 50 PERCENT. -HABITAT AND OUR LOCAL PARTNERS IMPROVED ACCESS TO LAND FOR SHELTER IN 41 COUNTRIES, MANY OF WHICH WERE IN LATIN AMERICA, THROUGH SOLID GROUND, OUR GLOBAL ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN. THE FOUR-YEAR CAMPAIGN HELPED MORE THAN 12.3 MILLION INDIVIDUALS THROUGH POLICY AND SYSTEMS CHANGES. HABITAT ORGANIZATIONS IN EUROPE, THE MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA HELPED 101,905 INDIVIDUALS THROUGH NEW CONSTRUCTION, REHABILITATIONS, INCREMENTAL CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIRS. AN ADDITIONAL 12,665 PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM PROFESSIONAL SERVICES PROVIDED BY HABITAT AND OUR PARTNERS. MARKET DEVELOPMENT WORK AND CIVIL SOCIETY FACILITATION HELPED ABOUT 1.9 MILLION PEOPLE. OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE AREA INCLUDE: -MORE THAN 9 MILLION TV VIEWERS IN KENYA LEARNED HOW TO MAKE INCREMENTAL HOUSING CONSTRUCTION MORE EFFICIENT AND OF HIGHER QUALITY THROUGH EPISODES OF THE POPULAR EVENING TALK SHOW, WICKED EDITION. THIS COLLABORATION BETWEEN HABITATS TERWILLIGER CENTER FOR INNOVATION IN SHELTER AND KENYAS NTV FEATURED ORGANIZATIONS PARTNERING WITH HABITAT IN MARKET DEVELOPMENT WORK IN KENYA, WITH THE PROGRAM SHARING HOW THEIR WORK MAKES AN IMPACT AND HELPS ARTISANS DEVELOP SKILLS. -HABITAT HOSTED 21,582 PARTICIPANTS IN OUR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RISK REDUCTION TRAININGS. THE TRAINEES HELPED COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD GROW MORE RESILIENT TO NATURAL DISASTERS AND OTHER SHOCKS.
PUBLIC AWARENESS AND EDUCATION HABITAT WORKS DILIGENTLY TO SHARE OUR MESSAGE OF HELPING FAMILIES BUILD STRENGTH, STABILITY AND SELF-RELIANCE THROUGH SHELTER WITH A WIDE RANGE OF AUDIENCES, USING A VARIETY OF MEDIA. THROUGH EVENTS IN COMMUNITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD, HABITAT INCREASES PUBLIC AWARENESS AND DEMONSTRATES OUR PRINCIPLES IN ACTION. HABITAT, THE MAGAZINE OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, SHARES COMPELLING STORIES OF VOLUNTEERS AND HOMEOWNERS AND REACHES MORE THAN 2 MILLION READERS EVERY YEAR. THROUGH THE HABITAT.ORG WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS, INCLUDING FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM, HABITAT PROVIDES DIGITAL PLATFORMS FOR CONSTITUENTS TO INTERACT WITH THE ORGANIZATION. THROUGH EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES, HABITAT GOES INTO COMMUNITIES TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND INCREASE THE AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING. EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2020 INCLUDE: -THE 36TH JIMMY & ROSALYNN CARTER WORK PROJECT TOOK PLACE IN OCTOBER 2019. VOLUNTEERS AND HOMEOWNERS BUILT 21 HOMES IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. -THE COST OF HOME CAMPAIGN IS MOBILIZING LOCAL HABITAT ORGANIZATIONS, PARTNERS, VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS ACROSS THE U.S. TO FIND SOLUTIONS AND HELP CREATE POLICIES THAT WILL ALLOW 10 MILLION INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOMES. IN FY2020, MORE THAN 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS THE U.S. BENEFITED FROM THESE ADVOCACY EFFORTS. -ON THE FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOBER, IN OBSERVANCE OF THE UNITED NATIONS-DESIGNATED WORLD HABITAT DAY, HABITAT AFFILIATES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND ORGANIZATIONS AROUND THE WORLD STAGED SPECIAL EVENTS TO RAISE AWARENESS AND EDUCATE INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES TO CALL FOR PROGRAMS, POLICIES AND SYSTEMS THAT MAKE POSSIBLE A WORLD WHERE EVERYONE HAS A DECENT PLACE TO LIVE. -AMID THE COVID-19 GLOBAL HEALTH CRISIS, HABITATS ANNUAL CAUSE MARKETING CAMPAIGN, HOME IS THE KEY, HIGHLIGHTED THE ISSUE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING AGAINST AN EVEN MORE PRESSING BACKDROP THAN IN YEARS PAST. DURING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2020, IHEARTRADIO RAN NATIONAL PSAS, AND DELTA SKY MAGAZINE AND HGTV MAGAZINE PUBLISHED STORIES ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN. TOGETHER WITH LOCAL AND NATIONAL NEWS COVERAGE AND SOCIAL MEDIA, THE CAMPAIGN GENERATED MORE THAN 153 MILLION IMPRESSIONS.
