SERVED OVER 150 CHILDREN AND YOUTH FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN PROGRAMS WEEKLY AFTERSCHOOL, ON WEEKENDS, INTERSESSION AND SUMMER BREAKS. PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON LEADERSHIP, ENRICHMENT, COMMUNITY BUILDING, LIFE AND WORK SKILLS, ACADEMICS AND HAWAIIAN CULTURAL VALUES AND PRACTICE. PROVIDED PROGRAMS IN 2019 FOR OVER 2,000 CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND LIFELONG LEARNERS IN GROUPS FROM BEYOND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, FOCUSING ON ENRICHMENT, ACADEMICS, LEADERSHIP, HAWAIIAN CULTURE, AND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PEOPLE AND THE NATURAL WORLD. MANAGED AND ACTIVELY MAINTAINED 50 ACRES OF LAND, RESOURCES, AND FACILITIES AT WAIPA AS LEARNING SITES FOR PROGRAMS, BOTH TO INCREASE PARTICIPANTS' HEALTH AND TO PROVIDE FOOD AND MATERIALS FOR WAIPA'S PROGRAMS. LEARNING SITES INCLUDED TWO REFORESTATION SITES, A STREAM RESTORATION SITE, LO'I KALO (TARO FIELDS), TWO VEGETABLE GARDENS, ONE FISHPOND, FRUIT ORCHARDS, A GREENHOUSE/PLANT NURSERY, AND SIX CAMPSITES. SOLD PRODUCE DURING THE YEAR FROM WAIPA'S TARO FIELDS AND GARDENS AND FED ITS VOLUNTEERS AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS. HOSTED COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS ON QUARTERLY WORKDAYS TO ASSIST WITH THE MAINTENANCE OF ITS LEARNING AND WORK SITES, AND ON WEEKLY POI THURSDAYS. MONITORED THE STREAM AND STREAM RESTORATION SITE. DURING 2019 WAIPA FOUNDATION FACILITATED USE OF ITS NEW FACILITIES, ITS COMMUNITY KITCHEN AND HALE IMU, WELCOMING FOOD ENTREPRENEURS, CREATING CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS AS TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES, AND CREATING VALUE ADDED WAIPA PRODUCTS FOR SALE. WAIPA'S WEEKLY POI MAKING AND DISTRIBUTION, HELD ON THURSDAYS AND FACILITATED AND RAN BY WAIPA FOUNDATION STAFF AND AN ESTIMATED 15-30 VOLUNTEERS WEEKLY, MADE AND DISTRIBUTED OVER 40,000 LBS OF POI DURING THE YEAR. WORKED TOWARD IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF THE NATURAL RESOURCES AND SYSTEMS WITHIN THE WAIPA WATERSHED THROUGH MONITORING AND RESTORATION ACTIVITIES. DURING THE YEAR, ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON IN STREAM BIOLOGICAL AND WATER QUALITY MONITORING, CLEARING OF INVASIVE PLANTS AND REPLACEMENT WITH NATIVE AND HAWAIIAN PLANTS, AS WELL AS MAINTENANCE OF PLANTINGS, INSTALLATION OF EROSION CONTROL FEATURES AND ASSISTANCE WITH CESSPOOL REPLACEMENT FOR RESIDENCES WITHIN THE WATERSHED. MAINTENANCE OF THE WAIPA AHUPUA`A (WATERSHED) AS A LIVING LEARNING CENTER THROUGH PROVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF OUTDOOR LEARNING SPACES AND ALL RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE AND ACCESSWAYS TO HOST ALL AGES OF LEARNERS AND PROVIDE RICH HANDS ON EXPERIENCE. GROWING, PRODUCING AND DISTRIBUTING HEALTHY AND TRADITIONAL PRODUCE AND FOOD PRODUCTS SUCH AS FRESH VEGETABLES, TARO, POI, ETC. ENGAGING COMMUNITY IN EATING HEALTHIER AND CONNECTING WITH LAND THROUGH FOOD BY PROVIDING MEALS FOR VISITING GROUPS. SUPPORTING LOCAL FOOD ENTREPRENEURS AND ENTERPRISE THROUGH THE PROVISION OF A COMMERCIAL KITCHEN AND MARKETING VENUES SUCH AS FOOD FESTIVALS, FARMERS MARKETS AND GATERINGS.THE ORGANIZATION DISTRIBUTED FLOOD RELIEF FUNDS TO TARO FARMERS WHO HAD FLOOD-RELATED LOSSES.
