KANAKA'OLE AND THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN TRADITIONAL HULA AS PRACTICED BY MARY KEKUEWA KANAELE AND EDITH K KANAKA'OLE. THE ORGANIZATION STRIVES TO TEACH AND ENCOURAGE INDIGENOUS HAWAIIAN CULTURAL EDUCATION THROUGH MEDIA MATERIAL, TEACHING HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE, RITUALS, CHANTS, LITERATURE AND OTHER ACTIVITIES.

KULA KAMALI'I O HI'IKEAKAIKAMALAMA IS A COMPREHENSIVE NATIVE-HAWAIIAN FAMILY BASED EARLY EDUCATION CENTER. EDUCATION IS GREATLY ENHANCED THROUGH HAWAIIAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCES WITHIN THE PRESCHOOL SECTOR. CHILDREN ARE PREPARED TO ENTER KINDERGARTEN IN EITHER A HAWAIIAN IMMERSION SCHOOL OR A NON-IMMERSION SCHOOL.

PAPAKU MAKAWALU: PAPAKU MAKAWALU IS THE ABILITY OF OUR KUPUNA TO CATEGORIZE AND ORGANIZE THEIR NATURAL WORLD AND ALL SYSTEMS OF EXISTENCE WITHIN THEIR UNIVERSE. PAPAKU MAKAWALU IS THE FOUNDATION TO UNDERSTANDING, KNOWING, ACKNOWLEDGING, BECOMING INVOLVED WITH, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, BECOMING THE EXPERTS OF THE SYSTEMS OF THIS NATURAL WORLD. HLAU O KEKUHI IS THE HLAU HULA (CLASSICAL DANCE COMPANY) AND THE CENTER OF CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE FOR EKF. THE CULTURAL BELIEFS AND PRACTICES IN WHICH EKF IS ANCHORED RADIATES FROM THE TRADITIONAL PRACTICES OF THE HLAU THAT CAN ACCOUNT FOR EIGHT GENERATIONS OF KUMU HULA.HLAU O KEKUHI IS CELEBRATED FOR ITS MASTERY OF THE AIHAA STYLE OF HULA (DANCE) AND OLI (CHANT). THE AIHAA IS A LOW-POSTURED, VIGOROUS, BOMBASTIC STYLE OF HULA THAT SPRINGS FROM THE ERUPTIVE VOLCANO PERSONA PELE AND HIIAKA, CHARACTERISTIC OF HAWAII ISLANDS CREATIVE FORCES. HLAU O KEKUHI HAS EARNED LOCAL, STATE, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR THEIR ART.THE LEADERSHIP OF THE DANCE COMPANY IS CURRENTLY TRANSMITTED THROUGH MATRILINEAL SUCCESSION AND WITH THE PASSING OF EDITH KANAKAOLE, HER DAUGHTERS PUALANI KANAKAOLE KANAHELE AND NLANI KANAKAOLE ASSUMED THE ROLE OF KUMU HULA. IN 2007, PUALANI RELINQUISHED HER POSITION TO HER DAUGHTERS, KEKUHI KEALIIKANAKAOLEOHAILILANI AND HUIHUI KANAHELE-MOSSMAN, WHO, ALONG WITH NLANI, BECAME THE THE KUMU HULA OF THE HLAU. CURRENTLY, THE HLAU IS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF NLANI AND HUIHUI.HLAU O KEKUHI HAS EMBARKED ON A MISSION TO PROMOTE HULA AS A CLASSICAL DANCE. HULA IS OFTEN CATEGORIZED AS A FOLK-ART IN MANY SETTINGS. WE FEEL THIS HAS ITS ADVANTAGES SUCH AS COMMON SOURCES OF DANCE INSPIRATION WITH OTHER INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. WE ALSO FEEL IT HAS ITS DISADVANTAGES SUCH AS A WATERED DOWN VERSION OF BOTH MARTIAL AND DANCE ART FORMS. WE WANT TO PLACE HULA IN THE WORLD OF CLASSICAL DANCE AS A PHYSICALLY RIGOROUS DANCE FORM ON PAR WITH MODERN DANCE, BALLET, AND THE LIKE.
