THE HAWAII APPLESEED CENTER FOR LAW AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE IS WORKING TO BUILD A HAWAII WHERE EVERYONE HAS GENUINE OPPORTUNITIES TO ACHIEVE ECONOMIC SECURITY AND FULFILL THEIR POTENTIAL. DATA-DRIVEN RESEARCH TO INFORM SOUND POLICY DECISIONS: HAWAII APPLESEED'S HAWAII BUDGET AND POLICY CENTER (HBPC) PROJECT CONDUCTS DATA-DRIVEN RESEARCH ON HAWAII STATE BUDGET, TAX, AND ECONOMIC POLICIES TO INFORM CHANGES THAT WILL INCREASE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL RESIDENTS AND ALLEVIATE POVERTY.
IMPACT LITIGATION TO ADDRESS BARRIERS TO EQUITY THAT CAN'T OTHERWISE BE RESOLVED: HAWAII APPLESEED'S LAWYERS FOR EQUAL JUSTICE (LEJ'S) PROJECT ENGAGES IN CLASS ACTION LITIGATION AND OTHER LARGE-SCALE CASES THAT HAVE PROTECTED THE RIGHTS OF MORE THAN 100,000 HAWAII RESIDENTS. LEJ'S CASES HAVE STOPPED ILLEGAL RENT OVERCHARGES, STEMMED FEDERAL LAW VIOLATIONS TO ENSURE FOSTER CHILDREN HAVE ADEQUATE RESOURCES, PRESERVED MEDICAL BENEFITS FOR MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES, ENSURED TIMELY ACCESS TO CRITICALLY NEEDED FOOD ASSISTANCE, AND SECURED OTHER IMPORTANT BENEFITS FOR HAWAII'S LOW-INCOME AND MARGINALIZED PEOPLE.
POLICY ADVOCACY AND COALITION BUILDING TO ENSURE OPPORTUNITY AND EQUITABLE TREATMENT FOR ALL OF HAWAII'S PEOPLE: HAWAII APPLESEED IDENTIFIES AND ADVOCATE FOR POLICIES THAT ARE BASED ON DATA AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES AIMED AT PROMOTING EQUITY AND OPPORTUNITY. WE BUILD THE RELATIONSHIPS NECESSARY TO MAKE LASTING CHANGE. THIS WORK HAS INCLUDED: SPEARHEADING A HAWAII TAX FAIRNESS COALITION TO SUCCESSFULLY PUSH FOR A STATE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT THAT WILL PROVIDE AN ESTIMATED $135 MILLION IN TAX RELIEF FOR LOW-INCOME WORKING FAMILIES WHO ARE FACED WITH SOME OF THE HIGHEST HOUSING COSTS IN THE NATION, THE LOWEST WAGES AFTER ACCOUNTING FOR COST OF LIVING, AND THE NATION'S SECOND HIGHEST STATE AND LOCAL TAX RATE; WORKING WITH A COALITION TO CREATE A STATE "SNAP DOUBLE-UP" PROGRAM THAT WILL HELP LOW-INCOME FAMILIES PUT FRESH PRODUCE ON THEIR TABLE WHILE SUPPORTING LOCAL AGRICULTURE; AND LEADING AND SUPPORTING EFFORTS AIMED AT ADDRESSING HAWAII'S HOUSING CRISIS.
